Default Outgoing Links - How many is too many?

How do the number of outgoing links affect your website? I am trying to avoid adding too many outgoing links so as not to detract visitors away from my site.

I need to build about 10 pages listing 10-12 resources each (curriculum providers/suppliers). Should I just list these or provide outgoing links that pop up in a new window?

I think providing links would be more helpful to visitors, but I don't want to hurt my site by having too many outgoing links. And I also don't want to detract visitors from my site and monetization methods, such as affliates.

Any thoughts?

If your site only have 10 pages and include 10 outbound links in each of the pages, and there is little content in the pages, likely it will be viewed as a directory and these pages may not get that high in search engine.

Search engine prefer content, outbound links related to the page content and links within paragraphs.

The other thing to consider is how many inbound links to the page (that has the outbound links), the more inbound links, the more link juice this page can get and the more it can give to the outbound links.

'paid links' is what search engines are trying to cut down in order to reduce the influence of it over the search results, there are lots of things going on over this topic, theories, methods etc. are all over the place, the battle is still on.

Thanks Foong!

My site already has about 50 content pages which have an average of 1 to 2 outgoing links each to relevant sources of more information. Some may have 0 outgoing links, some may have 3. I am trying to be pretty picky about it. (For example, I don't link to Amazon just because I made a book recommendation.)

The additional pages I need to add are of curriculum providers for different subjects. These pages have profitable keywords, and it is also content that my visitors need. They will be looking for information on where to purchase curriculum.

I'll try to add a graphic of each product and a brief description as well. I'm just wondering if I should list these as outgoing links or just list them and provide a web address.

Also, I eventually want to try a content 2.0 arrangement where visitors can submit their own curriculum reviews. (I don't know if that adds anything to the conversation or not.)

the key is to link only when that target page has info related to yours and that you are not covering it in this page. That is what google wanted it to be, but I would prefer less out links as possible (more out links send a signal to google your site has not cover the topic well and you need to reference out more often). Though I believe there may be some other opinion on this.

You are right about keeping the outbound relevant to the page content.

Ask yourself this, will the outbound link be useful to your reader?

I keep outbound links to minimum on most of my sites, keeping at 2 or 3 outbounds per page.

For search engines, Keep below 100 links (internal/external) on any page as they can have problems crawling 100+ links.
