I was looking for a picture yesterday on http://www.sxc.hu/home and found a picture I wanted to save. By the way, this is a great website that Lisa recommended in another post and I checked it out and it is great. All royalty free photos. Anyway, I scrolled down to look at availibility and saw that the owner wanted to be notified and credited when using it in a public work. Is there anyway to get around this? If I change the photo around a little is that considered theirs anymore and would this apply?

Here is the photo:

Thanks,
Kevin

Default Sorry Charlie!

Of course it is still their picture, no matter how you use it. Sad but true.

And that is only half the story. If any people are in the picture you are required to have a "model release" from each person as well. Just because someone sells you a picture doesn't mean the people in the pictures agrees for you to post it anywhere online or elsewhere.

Of course a lot of people ignore the laws in this area, BUT you are always taking a chance. I don't do it because I like to sleep well at night and don't like to worry about such things.

A lot of people downloaded music illegally for a long time, too, until a few music companies and artists sued random folks for thousands of dollars. It was a high price for those who got chosen to teach the others a lesson.

It is cheaper to buy a camera and print off some stock model releases for anyone you shoot.

Does it specify where you need to give credit. The reason I ask is because you can provide the credit in your footer or make an acknowledgements page.
