how can I prevent unauthorized usage of the pics of my paintings? like preventing download and copying

This is not possible. Don't buy into any software/script that tells you they can stop people from downloading your videos and images. Even if you employ techniques like disabling right clicks, etc., they can be circumvented. There are so many ways to grab images and videos (even streaming) from a website.

I usually just place my domain name and sometimes my name on my art work.

And if I find my stuff on someones website I ask for it to be removed (if it bothers me). If they don't comply I go to their hosting company. I have had to do this twice.

Ingenue is right, there is no real way of prevent someone from downloading or copying your pics.

If you decide to use a scripts, someone can disable Javascript in their Web browser to disable that script.

Just remember, when someone visits your web page, a copy of the image is downloaded to their local cache.

The best way is to include a watermark that includes you name in each image. This way someone would need to take the time to edit the image before reposting it.

That's really discouraging......the fear of having my ideas and works stolen has been the greatest deterrent in launching my own site. Sometimes I wonder if it's really worth the stress

Just use the text tool of your photo editing program.

Select the text tool, click anywhere on your image and start typing. You can then select the font you want, the styles, etc., and then move the text object to the corner of the image you want it on.

Another way allows you to protect more of the picture so it cannot be cropped out as it can at the edge. You can make a graphic (an unimaginative one would be a circle with the words "Do Not Copy" or better an ad of sorts "Purchases Welcome") and place it over a larger area, perhaps a key area. Just make it mostly transparent in the graphics program so it is only slightly visible. That is pretty hard to remove.

Sorry you have to worry about stuff like that. Many on this site have had their work stolen, even whole pages of text, etc.

I would say yes, however most everything these days is easily manipulated to "prove" whatever you want.
