Default Putting lyrics on my site???

I am not sure which forum to place this under

I want to create some pages with camping songs and camping stories...but I am not sure even where to begin to start researching the legalities of this.

I think the songs are less of a problem since most songs are quite old. The stories I know will need to be credited unless, again, they have been around for a while..but I don't know how to find out any of this and I don't want any problems....I want to make sure I do things the right way.

Any advice???

I suggest you start here

pdinfo.com

Public domain music

A reference site to help identify public domain songs and public domain music . . . lists of public domain music, royalty free music recordings you can license, and public domain sheet music reprints . . . precisely the music you need for your business, organization, or personal use.

Thanks for the info Lajocar, I checked it out.

It wasn't promising and kind of depressing .

The list of songs in the public domain is not long, relatively speaking, and the songs are very very dated.

So how do performers sing in local clubs...or on street corners...or how do the scouts sing their songs at summer camp...or even at campfires...without everybody violating copyright?

How do other sites post old songs that are not on the list?

Is the whole world one big copyright violation? LOL...it seems that way after reading through this site.

I wonder if I should just go ahead and put up some of the older songs we usually sing and if I have any problems I can just take them down. Unless I am putting up something new and recent...I don't expect to have any problems.

Don't be tempted. Copyright owners (and before you are too harsh on them think about how you like working hard on something for your site, maybe paying real money in the process, and then having others steal it) often go after violators. Even churches that have made copies of music have been fined thousands, for example.

You have to do research. For example, to refer to the churches again, they can subscribe to a service for a set amount each year that allows them to use certain (a lot) of music. Sure it's a pain, but so are taxes (sorry, to mention that but mine are a pain and not done yet).

Post Song Lyrics

I just go after lyric sites that offer an embedded wigit of the songs words in a scrolling fashion. But it's only words from popular tuned on the radio(Doubt they have old-time campfire tunes).

If worst comes to worst, give credit where credit is due(A link or a least cite your source)
