Default Shadow Text in PhotoShop

Lisa, just saw your newly redesigned SBI! site. Looks fab! Got a question (and this is for anyone). How do you do the shadow text like on Lisa's header http://www.flat-stomach-exercises.com Just bought PhotoShop and wanna start learning some things.

I tried a Google search but I must be using the incorrect term for it. I don't want a drop shadow. I know how to do that.

Hey PPC, (can I call you PPC? )

I don't know how she did it, but this is how I do it: (It works in Fireworks as well)

1) Make your canvas twice as high as the text itself and place the text at the top.

2) Now copy the text and paste it. Change the fill color to gradient (lighter at the top with the canvas color and darker at the bottom with your backround color). Important: On the pasted copy, change the outline color if it has one to either transparent or the exact color of your canvas (background).

3) Now flip the copy upside down: flip horizontal and move it around so that the top of the copy touches the original. (so it looks like a reflection)

4) Click on the copy layer and bring the opacity down until it looks good to you. (usually about 65%)

There are several ways to do it, but that's the quickest.

You can also do an overlay gradient mask but that's a whole nother animal.

My way is, more often than not, completely different from everyone elses.

Hope that helps.

I used the gradient mask ("the other animal" as DotComBot says ) but you can pretty much follow his Fireworks instructions for PhotoShop too.

I made a copy of the original text layer, flipped it upside down using Edit/Free Transform/Scale. Then I created a gradient mask. I used the default gradient settings and just kept playing around with it until I felt I had it right.

And thanks for the compliment on the new design.

Thanks you two. I think I got it. You should have seen the way I was trying to do it. Geeez!

And DotComBot you can call me PPC if ya want. A lot of people on the forum use that nickname. Plus "ppcfanatic" is a tricky word to type on the keyboard. Try it 5 times fast. LOL

I think the word you're looking for is called, "mirror text". Here's a tutorial that shows you how to do it in photoshop.

Yep...that's another way. What I like about graphic programs is that there are usually multiple ways to accomplish the same thing.
