Default using another website's videos as links...

does anyone know anything about if you want to add informational videos from another website to your own? basically the question is if it's ok..? would i have to mention the source of the videos.. (which wouldn't be a problem) or would i need to get their permission somehow (even if they are just links to their content?

how about if it's a tutorial type informational video from a government website that i want to mention on my site? would it be safe just to provide a link with a description? i wish there was a website out there that describes the legal stuff about creating a website... basically what's allowed and what's not. thanks for any info!

It depends on individual website, some website release content that you can put on your own website, some do not allow that. To be safe, you should contact the website owner before putting their material on your website.

Video sites like youtube (and many others) allows videos posted on their site to be embedded in your own website, people posting videos to youtube will have to agree to this usage condition too, so it is quite alright to put an embedded link on your web pages to youtube videos.

I agree with fong, definitely, check with the different websites.

I think it's always good to include the source of the video... especially if it's a government video, it will add credibility to your site.

The next issue to consider here, however, is where the video is hosted. If the video is playing on your website, but hosted on their website, it will be using up their bandwidth (so some websites may have a problem with that... but some websites will still allow you to do that, because it may bring traffic to them)... so it's always better to check with each website.

thanks guys,
i've already contacted one of the websites and i'm stiill waiting for a response. but one last question... how about just linking to the videos? for example if i had a website on artifacts, can i just say... "for an amazing artifacts video, click here"? should i also use a reference for that link? or would a reference be unnessesary because they're going to go to that website anyway and find out who the source is? thanks.

If you're just linking, than no reference info is needed. Credit is actually given by providing the link to that site.

If you're embedding someone's video on your site, that's like taking their content and placing it on your own site. In that case you should always get permission and/or give the author credit. (Unless it's something like YouTube where the author automatically grants embedding permissions through use of the service).

But if you're linking to someone else's video and providing a link from your site to theirs, then I don't believe it's necessary to leave a reference.

If you are linking to there video, on there site im sure they will be glad of this you are promoting there site in a sense but if you host there video ask permission or add a disclaimer.
