Since I don't use either paint net or gimp, I use Paint Shop Pro, I can tell you a process you can use but not the command names in those programs. Hopefully someone will come along and add that information.
You use layers. Make a separate layer for the watermark and put it above the picture.
Make it transparent enough that it is only just noticeable in your picture. You can move it around on the layer to get the placement where you want on each picture (where it cannot be easily cropped out). Save the layer separately so you can use it over and over without redoing.
By the way, I watched your U-Tube Studio tour. You are a terrific painter. To anyone who hasn't looked: it is worth taking time to do so. You will enjoy.
