Default Yes they are copyrighted.

You cannot copy anything without permission. Please note that there is a period at the end of the statement. (Weird attempt at being slightly humorous but making a real point.)

Images have two kinds of protection, one of which is often ignored but a lot of people are being sued because of it. First, a photo is itself protected and every site that distributes images has different copyright agreements with users whether offered freely or for a charge. Second, there are "model" laws that say you must have permission to show someone's image (even their backside if they can be identified). This law also applies to non-human things like boats with a name on them.

Be very careful. Read permissions carefully. Even if you take pictures yourself, if people are in them get model releases.

Type in "public domain." You might find some photos and artwork that you can freely use.

You can also search on "free stock images". Some of the Stock Photo houses offer free images along with their paid offering.

Default No. Unfortunately.

You have to always be "worried" or let's say cautious.

Dee's suggestion is good. Learn about public domain. It is a little complicated in some respects (you cannot just go by age because things can get renewed in ways), but you can usually use those items freely when they qualify.

There are various sites that some use, but you just have to study the rules on each site. Write down (copy) the release statements on the site and make sure you get model releases as well as image releases if there are people or special identifiable subjects in any images. Then follow the rules.

I recommend creating a small text file associated with any picture you use, saving information about where you got the image and conditions for its use. Unless you have an incredible memory, of course.

Everyone wants a simple solution. No luck.

I always look at Dreamstime when I am looking for stock photos with no need of copyright. They have a large pay for section, but also a pretty large free section. I have gotten many high quality images from the free section that were royalty free.

The link is in my sig file if you want to check them out.
