Default Did I make a mistake before I even started?

I am a newbie to the website developing world but I have done some research too. I followed Lisa's advice and chose a topic that I have much interest in. On the face of it, it may look like an "aboutme" site but I would like to have a lot of information available to the public on my topic too; facts, links, etc. I have a domain name registered through Godaddy and started my hosting through Godaddy too. My ultimate goal was to have a site that I could use Google Adsense with to earn some money. Today I read that Google may not accept an "aboutme" site at all. Have I made a mistake already?? Also, I'm thinking I need to switch webhosts as I'm not sure if Google will accept the look of Godaddy since it's advertisement is at the top of my page. Any advice would be appreciated!

Well, what type website is it? Is it a personal website with fun links and facts or something?

Yes, that is my vision. To have the front page be about me and then the rest be informational, fun facts, links to pertinent sites, etc.

I Suggest finding out directly from Google before you start to panic. If Google denies your website, then think of another way you can give value to the people on the internet.
Don worry you will be okay.

Default Relax

First relax, no reason to panic. Whether you made a mistake or two is not a question. Almost every day we all make mistakes. That is the nature of doing work on the web. You try stuff, evaluate your work and adjust. After it is perfect you go away a couple of days and come back only to discover that what you thought was really good needs changing to be half good!

But every day you get better. And pretty soon you really do get relatively good. Still the learning goes on. If you learn to enjoy it all you will do fine.

Now godaddy is a good company as far as I know and a lot of people use it so I wouldn't worry about that. You should not have an ad on your page. Someone who uses them may know more, but you design your own pages and the home page is always named "index.html." Perhaps they put up a placeholder page or something, but unless you have free hosting and I do not think they even have such, you will not have anything on your pages except what you put there. Edit your own index page and when you ftp (transfer) it to your site it will be just what you want.

Not to make a joke of a serious question, but if that is true you can just change your "face." (We may not be able to do that so easy in real life, but we can on the internet.)

You can make your page look like anything you want. If you write on the page that your site is just a personal site about you, that is what it is.

If you have a theme as you say, and put in the headlines "All About Knitting" or whatever, that is what the search engines will see. And if you don't like what you have today you can change it tomorrow. That is the beauty of web site work. It can be whatever you want it to be, whenever you want it to.

Obviously the search engines will try to find sites that have the best information and educational sites will rank higher than personal sites, unless they build some specific kind of validity based on referral links.

Just have fun. Learn all you can. Try what sounds interesting. If (when) you change your mind, do something different.

If anything, register. If they don't approve they'll reject it and you can make an appeal. Either way, you keep going and learn all you can, that's really what life is, right? Learning all you can then you die.... God I was hoping to make this a positive message.

Default No mistake made, but refocus may be necessary.

Godaddy is a good company. The restrictions that are in place are not specific to Godaddy, many good sites are hosted on Godaddy. The issues at all may be on the type of hosting you have. If you have Godaddy ads at the top then you have a low cost hosting solution. Godaddy's low cost solution may not be what you need. But no fear they have other hosting packages. Good thing about domain names is they are cheap, and if you dont have a good one you can register another one and attach it to your hosting account. Now the real problem.

Lisa's website 2createawebsite stresses that you need to think first about your audience. She stress people want the meat first then they want your biography. If you make a site that focuses on you, your audience is going to be very small and not worth the adsense. Meaning that people want to know you only after they realize that what you are saying, or displaying is interesting to them. Your initial audience will only be friends and family and it may not grow if your landing page is about you.

Focus instead on your hobby or something. You like Sports, write about your experience in the sport and focus on the sport not you. You like woodworking focus on the woodworking and your experiences with woodworking. You like Dating, focus on the Dates and your experiences with Dates. Then once you have a audience add the info about you. This will be more worthwhile for the goals you have stated interest in.
