First relax, no reason to panic. Whether you made a mistake or two is not a question. Almost every day we all make mistakes. That is the nature of doing work on the web. You try stuff, evaluate your work and adjust. After it is perfect you go away a couple of days and come back only to discover that what you thought was really good needs changing to be half good!
But every day you get better. And pretty soon you really do get relatively good. Still the learning goes on. If you learn to enjoy it all you will do fine.
Now godaddy is a good company as far as I know and a lot of people use it so I wouldn't worry about that. You should not have an ad on your page. Someone who uses them may know more, but you design your own pages and the home page is always named "index.html." Perhaps they put up a placeholder page or something, but unless you have free hosting and I do not think they even have such, you will not have anything on your pages except what you put there. Edit your own index page and when you ftp (transfer) it to your site it will be just what you want.

On the face of it, it may look like an "aboutme" site

Not to make a joke of a serious question, but if that is true you can just change your "face." (We may not be able to do that so easy in real life, but we can on the internet.)
You can make your page look like anything you want. If you write on the page that your site is just a personal site about you, that is what it is.
If you have a theme as you say, and put in the headlines "All About Knitting" or whatever, that is what the search engines will see. And if you don't like what you have today you can change it tomorrow. That is the beauty of web site work. It can be whatever you want it to be, whenever you want it to.
Obviously the search engines will try to find sites that have the best information and educational sites will rank higher than personal sites, unless they build some specific kind of validity based on referral links.
Just have fun. Learn all you can. Try what sounds interesting. If (when) you change your mind, do something different.
