experiences with new site
I wanted to start this post to go over my experiences with a site I'm going to be working on as a case study for my own personal use. Maybe it can come in handy with people here who are looking to get into the blogging side of the business. Basically I'm going to write down the steps I've taken for my new site and give out information I'm tracking as well as take in new information from the people here on the forum.
Basic background of the project
I have made a few different sites in the past that have been hard to maintain due to time and my interest in the topics being sort of "flavor of the month". Most of these sites were video game related, one of which did really well at the start. There have been a few I really loved, but I just had a hard time keeping up and running while still giving time towards other things. So I had to evaluate what I was going to be able to keep writing about without feeling like I was taking too long to get posts out in a timely professional manner.
With that said, I decided that I was going to work on a site that looked into a broader spectrum of what I was writing about before. I know that closing the niche down to something more precise would be ideal, but it seemed like I wasn't able to write about it because I was always moving onto different games not playing the same thing over and over.
Now to where I am now. I've created a new site that encompasses a bigger spectrum of games, but still in niche that's more refined then just video games in general. My site is about getting to end game in different Multi Player Online Role Playing Games(MMOs). Since I play a lot of different MMOs i figured it would be easier to write about my experiences with each game opposed to keeping with one game and getting bored with it a month or two later.
My new ideas for this project
Ive been working on getting different social networks set up for this project. Here is a list of platforms I am going to be using.
- Twitter - 120 followers all devoted to video games. Been working on it for about 3 months so far
- facebook - 100 followers, basically friends family and random people from work.
- Twitch.tv - new to streaming my games, 9 subs in 2 weeks. Pretty good
- youtube - 13 followers, but I am a partner. Working on this as a side project
- Pintrest - not sure how im going to use my account, but I know it will come in handy.
- Game Servers - I pay for servers for the games I play, I use ad's on these to bring people to the webpage
What I've done
Ive focused on posting at least once or twice a week, and using forum and blog posting as a soucre of getting viewers. I've set up google analytics in order to track the sites progress and well as websmaster tools. Ive posted serveral times in a forums for a minecraft server I play on with links in the site and was able to get one person to comment on my article. My other link submission was in the other games forum I am playing on, as well as streaming the whole process of my character leveling process in the game. That has brought me a few viewers. Im going to keep on doing what is working and ill let you all know how it is going as soon as I have more information to give.
I have had roughly 51 viewers since the site went live 2 weeks ago. We all have to start somewhere XD.
I love that you've chosen to document this publicly. And I understand what you mean about not having the interest. That's why I quit my last site. I firmly believe that since it is harder to get traffic today that evaluating long-term interest is more crucial than ever.
With regards to promotion, I don't know if you follow TysIphoneHelp but he has an iPhone/gaming channel and he does a lot of live, Google Hangouts where he demonstrates video games and strategies. Actually his girlfriend has a channel that does the same.
Are you going to do any paid advertising? You could run some FB ads targeted to people who like a very specific MMO games. For example, target men, 18-30 years old who like certain games or "Like" specific Pages related to the game. That would get you a very targeted audience to "Like" your FB page.
well I have not looked into Facebook ads just yet. I was going to save that for a later time to tackle. I will look up Tyiphonehelp and see what he is doing. Thanks for the advice, as I'm sure its stuff that is working for you.
As for stuff I was working on today since I posted this forum post
I've added pictures to the featured images of my posts. I feel as if I wasn't utilizing the theme I picked properly. I want to get more into detail on how to use Wordpress to SEO my pictures I use from the games. I just know there is something that will make the search engines find them better.
I wrote three more articles today and posted two of them today with updates to what has been going on in the games I was working on. I saved one for a just in case I can't get an article out in time next week. But, it will definitely see the light of day sooner or later.
I've added tags to everything. I'm not sure if tags have an effect on SEO or even user navigation because I've never used them, but I figured it's time to try new things and see what happens. As well as adding tags, I also categorized everything into categories. I am doing this so that later I can work on my menu to have people look for the games they are only interested in.
I added social networks to the site so I can be social XD, and I also added a review section where I added a review as well as links to my Amazon affiliate account for the game I'm reviewing. Both links are in the review and on the side bar as an Ad spot.
Other then all that, I did some basic maintenance to the site for overall looks. I think things are coming along nice.
Things I want to work on
Adding some adsense sooner or later
working on the video section
find more areas to post some links to get some traffic
work on Facebook ads, this will require some research.
Until next time.

Reason: random error
Just an update of what ive been workin on. Ive created a facebook business/fan page. Im working on having the articles I write to automatically be updated on both my facebook and twitter pages via a plugin of some sort. I dont know what one I want to use just yet, but its being researched as we speak. I also added a few more articles to my database of "to post at a later date". I posted the other article I wrote the other day and added links to the Minecraft forums as well as some links in reddit. Ive never used reddit, but I was able to get a few upvotes, so Im assuming that was good XD. Also Im working on a podcast with some friends, and we decided to use my domain and site to host the podcast. This could be something big since its based on the same topics. Really excited about that.
As far as stats, my views in the past week increase by 80 percent. I thought that was a pretty big jump. Most of the views are coming from the minecraft forums, a few from reddit, and the rest organic traffic. I think its going well, and I hope any of this is helpping some new people on the forums.
Thanks Poppas for the informative posts and for the time that you spend to write them.
Not a problem. I will have an update on thursday. Ive been busy at my day time job as well as writting a ton of different things up.

But that's OK because I had those articles I wrote before hand come in handy. While reading some other blogs I saw some things I wanted to implement into my blog.
What Ive added
I added the Socialize plugin to the site, because I'm assuming its going to make things easier for users to share via social media. Ive never used Socialize, but if anyone has any insight please let me know.
I'm looking into a newsletter type thing to start getting a list going. Main goal with this is for giving out the guides I plan on writing sooner or later for the website, and of course giving out info as to when I post a new article.
Ive bought a new device for recording my Playstation 3 adventures. It was about 120 bucks, and its pretty cool. It can be used to record anything with an HD out and in port. So I can also use it for the computer if I need to.
Ive added some games to the library as medium. I feel without enough medium there could be a loss of interest for me. I just hope that by adding to much I don't distract from some of the articles. One of the game im going to be playing and also making videos for is going to be borderlands 2, since I was able to acquire a game of the year edition on one of those silly cyber Monday sales.
Ive also bought a nice microphone for the podcast me and my buddies are going to work on. That cost me about 90 bucks with a stand and a pop filter. I cant wait to see how that goes. For those of you that didnt read the upper posts, Me and my buddies wanted to make a podcast on some video game related materials. Its mostly going to be about indie gaming, and the industry in general.
Continued looking for good places to promote the site. I usually spend some time at work looking for candidates to post some links in either comments or forums posts. Every post I make now gets a link in reddit, twitter, facebook, a forum for said topic, a comment if it can be justified, and twitch streaming if the game is streamable. I looked into facebook ads, and still need to work out how I can use its ad system. I don't want to funnel money into nothing XD.
All in all, I guess I shouldn't say I haven't done anything for the site. I should say I have not done much typing for the site lol.
Things I need to work on
Youtube videos take time to edit, i need to hire some help. Since im a partner, that may have some potential to lead to some youtube money.
I need to get better at working on links and commenting on a daily basis. It seems if I take a few days off, potential visitors seem to decline.
Well, I still think I am doing good, so until next time
here is what i have been researching for the last few days. I want to start an adword campaign that sends people to a specific review page i am going to wrtie. The review will have a link to my amazon affiliate page. Ive never really worked on this, but im hoping that it will bring people to my review as well as expose some of my other content to them as well. Im also almost finished with some videos ive been working on that will help suppliment the adwords campain by linking to the review page in hopes to get some free traffic from there.
When I get home tonight im going to start promoting the podcast we are going to be running at the beggining of the year. The tentaive names are "knights Of The Realm Reborn" or just "End Of Games Podcast". We are all still fighting about that XD. To set this up, im going to create a page and try to optimize it as much as I can. I need to create a few pictures that will pretty much be a coming soon banner.
I have 2 more articles that will be hitting tonight once I get off and am able to sit in front of my own connection. One of the articles are going to be able the up and comming podcast and the other will be either the review page, or a small article ive been writing about indie survival games. Really just depends on what I can get done with the adwords.
For those of you that use screen capture or streaming software. I would suggest giving open broadcast services a shot. Its an open source program that I cant live without. I use it to record gameplay as well as stream. It can be used for so much more.
Until next time.
