Cool Using MacOSX TextEdit to code HTML - HELP!

Hi - new to this forum and new to web building ! I cannot reopen my textedit file to edit new html tags in a simple web page that i created. when i click on the edit file, i just open the same web page. The code works, i understand that, just can't edit from the existing textedit file once its saved !!!. is this the way it works ? you get one chance per file to get it right ? Also, i have set the preferences of the textedit file to "text" and saved as html so it works.
any help would be great. thanks

Default Never Used Mac Os But..

I am sure the issue you are running into is that once you save a file as .hmtl from the text edit app, the file is no longer using the text edit standard file extension. A program only knows what files that it is able open and use by the letters following the filename, like .txt .doc .exe These are examples of file extensions. This idea is called "file association".

In windows you can right click on a file and tell it to "open with" and choose a program, I doubt this is an option for you. However you can simply open the text edit app and then choose file>open and then locate the html file to open.

Or you can rename the file to .txt and open it, then re save as .html

Like Nixwebo said, you can open the html file with a text editor, change the html tags, re-save it as .html and upload it to the server again.

Also, another way you can do it, and this is useful if you are working on your website from multiple computers:
Open the web page in your browser... in Windows, you can right click on your mouse anywhere in the page (not sure if this works in Mac, but I am sure there is something equivalent), and click on "View Source Code". Copy the source code and paste it into a text file, edit, and re-save it as a .html file, and upload it again to the server.

Hope I am not causing confusion

Yes, you can set it up so that your .html file opens in Text Editor instead of your default browser.
  • Highlight your .html file by clicking it once
  • Go to the "File" menu and select "Get Info", or simply press Command+i
  • Now where it says "Open With", click the expanding arrow if the tab sin't already open
  • Choose "TextEdit" from the pull down menu

Now when you double click your .html file, it will open in TextEdit instead of your browser. Now to view your page in a browser, just go to the File menu and select "Open File". Then I would bookmark the site.

By doing this, you can open your html in your editor, and save changes as you edit. With the page open in the browser, just hit "refresh" to see the changes.

I know this is an old post, but just in case there are other mac people out there besides myself.
