    Default Send an e-card script?

    Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of adding some kind of "tell a friend" or "send an e-card" script next to each quote on some kind of pretty QuotesInSight backround....

Does anyone know how this can be done?

I think not only would it please my visitors, it could also create some viral marketing for the site

    Thanks in advance,
    Hugs,
    Kerry

    Hi Kerry

I used to have one of these on a soap opera site I owned years ago. It was a huge hit! I think I got the script from The CGI Resource http://cgi.resourceindex.com or a similar site that offers free downloads of scripts. I'm sure there are many more advanced scripts out there these days (probably written in PHP, etc.) So I would do a search for "ecard scripts". I did this back in 2000 and I'm not too sure many people use PERL/CGI much anymore.

Now, you won't be able to install this on your SBI! domain because they don't allow script installation. I'm assuming that's what you're talking about right or do you have another site? If you are talking about your SBI! site then your other option may be to do a remotely hosted option where all the functionality is hosted on the company providing the script. You don't have as much control with remotely hosted but it's still a good option if you can find a good script.

    Default Good idea.

    Kerry,

I'm becoming more and more a fan of yours. You really come up with a lot of good ideas. Good luck with this one. I think it has lots of potential.

Just thinking off the top of my head here—so this may not lead to anything—but I think it should work. It would allow you to keep control no matter the relationship involved with SBI.

If this is SBI and you can't have scripts there, can't you just link to another site where you have the script. I can have unlimited domains on my host (Dreamhost) and I started one site with an alternate name, then got the one I wanted when someone let it go. I didn't want to move pages from the first one because of links to it, so now I use both with links intertwined. Sounds like a mess but so far no problems.

    Hi Lisa and James,

Thanks for the pearls of wisdom...I wasn't aware that I couldn't install scripts with SBI... eek! Now how I am supposed to conquer the big quote sites and spread the joy of quotations throughout the world???
    LOL!

Lisa- Do you think James suggestion would work? I'm going to have to sit and think about this one, seems a bit daunting of a task....

    Thanks again,
    Hugs,
    Kerry

It will work because you'd be hosting the script somewhere else, not SBI!. But of course that involves buying another domain and hosting so keep that in mind. So what you'd do is install the script code on the 2nd domain/hosting account and when the code calls for the script files you'd have to change the path to http://www.otherdomain.com/scripts/script.php (or whatever the name of the script is).

It may end up being more work than you want to do but it also greatly depends on how complex the card script is. That is the bigger issue because every script is going to be different and call for different things. If the card script is complicated then it may just be best to create the entire ecard function on that new domain, make the design look like your SBI! site and then just link over to that domain from your SBI! site.

Default Remember, dedicated site not required.

    Kerry,

You are no doubt aware of this but don't forget that you wouldn't need a unique site just for this purpose. Do you have more than one domain now? If you do you can just put the file on that. You don't have to have internal links to it from that other site, just from the one you want to use it, your quotes site. Probably make a separate folder for that purpose: ie "QuotesFolder." There could be other uses that would call for it later.

Your other site can have anything you want on it without being bothered by this folder. By the way. Who first said, "Where there's a will there's a way," I wonder. Maybe I can find the answer on your site!

No offense to him but didn't he say it's an all-in-one hosting option?

You may have lost me. Offense to who? Ken Evoy? The "all in one" refers to the fact it comes with hosting, site builder and some other tools. There's still a lot of regular hosting features missing with SBI! and I hope they'll be adding them soon. Especially script installation. That would be so nice.

    Default Well, well...

Yay! I was checking out the Resource HQ within SBI and I came across a nifty tool created by Richard Gorham called "Ecard system" , so I bought it and yes! it works within QuotesInSight (SBI Site)....

So far, I think it will meet my initial needs Just thought I'd share!

PS: There's also a discount for SBIers!

Oh great! You know, I forget about that little resource area. I forget to check there myself when looking for certain tools. Glad you found something.
