Default Java Trouble

I just upgraded my laptop, only to find out that everytime I try to use a website powered by java or even try to download java, my browser shuts down.

Has this happened to anyone before, and how can I fix it?

What browser do you use? Assuming you currently have java installed, which version?

I just installed IE 7 the other day. Yes, I had Java installed already.

Are you trying to download version 6, update 3?

If you aren't trying to download it from sun systems, it may cause problems. You can get it here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_manual.jsp

Is that where you are downloading? With IE 7 that shouldn't create problems (you already knew that, though) so I'm not sure what's happening. Maybe someone that uses IE can help, I don't (don't get me started ).

Love the new avatar, by the way.

What exactly did you update? Hardware? Software?

If hardware then I don't think it is caused by this update. In this case you probably want to remember if and what settings have you changed in IE or anything else. I have had ridiculous problems with really simple solution, yet I mess with them whole day thinking it must be something new I have installed, just because I forget that I changed some minor settings or disabled some services.

If you updated some software, like IE, Windows, Java.. anything. Then there is always chance (A BIG one!) that even the biggest, best funded companies let some buggy sh*t out. It might be that new update doesn't suddenly support some of your hardware or something like that.
In this case you probably might want to restore your system to earlier stage, and hope that they have fixed the problem in next update.

Or if you have Java installed for a long time try to install new one, if you have the new version, then re-install it. If that doesn't help re-install IE, if that doesn't help then try out FireFox.. you will never want to see IE again

Also, there is SUN Java and Micro$oft Java. If you are using SUN java then try out M$ one, or vice versa.

I got it to work. I had to uninstall java and reinstall. I also decided to try out firefox. So far I don't see too much of a difference from IE (yet). I'm old fashioned. I don't do well with change. But, I'll give it a try. I did have the same trouble with Firefox until I reinstalled java.

Thanks for the help guys.

Trust me, (there's a bad opening line, eh?)

If you use Firefox for a week you'll never want to touch IE again. Of course that's just my opinion, but I don't like to change things either. I used Firefox for about three days and never wanted to go back. The tabbed browser makes it worth it for me. Include all the add-ons you can install and it's not even a choice for me. It will take a bit of getting used to, but it is worth it.

Default Yeah, kinda

What you say is pretty much true, DotComBot, but you really need to keep IE handy for occasional use. Can't say why, probably IE hacks on some sites, but every once in a while there is a site (primarily financial sites) that just won't work right in Firefox. Not too often anymore, though.

Nevertheless, Firefox is much better. Especially for web work there are some very good add in programs.

Good Success!

James

Thanks guys. I'm only trying it out on my laptop right now. I don't do any design work on there. I don't want my lack of experience with Firefox to cause any issues (although I can't foresee any. I'm just a cautious guy.). You guys are taking me outside my comfort zone. But I guess that's how you improve yourself.
