Default Quotes and Italics

OK...I am now validating my code and have run into some additional issues. I have fixed half of them but a few remain.

I have a paragraphs in my content in which I have four or five quotes that I want to also italicize.

Ex: <p>I have included in the site, articles entitled, My Air Force Days.</p>

I first tried to just put quotes around "My Air Force Days" but quickly found out that won't work. I also tried to italicize the quote; <i>My Air Force days</i>...but that does not take either. I can't seem to find an answer that I can make heads or tails of on how to do this.

Any idears...

Default A little explanation

The chart referred to above is helpful, lots of information.

The problem, Sgt., is that a lot of these marks have meaning in html code and for that reason your computer/browser cannot distinguish code from text and makes a mess of things at times. For that reason, when writing text (even in the text part of your tags like the content part of a link) you cannot use code symbols and must use the substitutes called "special characters."

Instead of quotes you write:

& #8220;My Air Force Days& #8221;
(no space after the &, couldn't get it to post right without the space.)

<i>My Air Force days</i> should work, even in xhtml, but many people discourage using that method to italicize since it is really design. They suggest using css or (the method I often use because it is easier) to use the emphasize tag, <em>My Air Force days</em> instead. For the same reason the strong tag is suggested (<strong>My Air Force days</strong>) instead of bold. Almost all browsers (perhaps all) use italics and bold for these.

It could be that you had some " marks or whatever mess up the code when you tried the <i> xxx </i> though because it should have worked.

Default Italian Quotes

Thanks guys, but like usual, I couldn't figure it out beforehand....before I posted, but did it after I posted, lol.

Yeah, I took my final page and validated it and came up with 145 errors! It not validate with <i></i> for some reason....I had to go back and use <q></q> for quotes and <em></em for italics.

Another thing, I thought I had read or some told me that you didn't need to close out the <p> in XHTML, but the validator said I did?

The other thing was &. Had to use the symbol for it to validate.

A major problem was the DOCTYPE...I forgot the encoding language.

I think I am down to five errors left, so will work on those today...As usual you guys are great! -I still find myself dropping in old html every so often...hard to break the habit

I use italics for thoughts since quotes I usually use it for dialogue. If I use quotes for both thoughts and dialogue, I (and the readers) might get confused.
