Default Website building help

hi all,

I'm a newbie here... glad I found this useful site...

I am thinking of building a website that require my members to log in and fill in some data into a database. The website should then be able to use the data from this database to display info.

I wonder how quick and simple it is to build such a site with SBI! ?

I have just basic web building skill using microsft word.

Thanks in advance for advice!

Cheers,
Seb

Hey seb07,

welcome aboard. SBI! doesn't allow you to use databases or write scripts. SBI! has built in tools, like form build it, which lets you build forms on your site, RSS/blog it and such. If you're looking to do something very specific like making registeration and login for your users, then you have to go with other host and using PHP in conjunction with mysql database to do that. What exactly are you looking for to do in your site? Maybe i can help you build a site in PHP and mysql.

Hey Webdev,

Thanks for your advice.

I was looking through the thread and found something similar here...

http://www.websitebabble.com/website...databases.html

It pretty common function... users key in info on your website and the website stores and uses the info to display a list...

Wonder if there is a simpler way to build such sites than to do our own coding?

Seb

What information are you looking to gather from your users to store? If you're looking to build a web directory of sites, you can find paid scripts that let you create web directory site. If you're looking to build something small and simple, then i might be able to help you with coding.

Hey Seb01,

I have plan to write mysql database tutorials later when i get to them. If you can wait for the tutorials that be great but if you like me to make you the site soon, then i can provide you my services for some fee. No, i WON'T charge you $40/hr...lol. Depending how easy your site is, i'll do it for a fixed low fee. But I would rather have you learn PHP and mysql. That way you learn and don't rely on others

Default Look for CMS

There are lots of things that are already done. I found it pretty easy to add Dynamic content into CMS - Content Management Systems.

Maybe you can find a WordPress plugin that would do the thing you want or a Joomla Extension.

Or like WebDev told you - get someone to do it for you.

I've always wondered about those CMS systems. They're not really SE friendly though are they because of all the functionality right?

Content Management Systems are pain in the ass. There is a learning curve to use any CMS. If you decide use one, you have to stick to it because it will take you while before you master all the features it gives you.

It's always best to start with a simple HTML site.

I agree that its best to start with a simple html site, but when it comes to databases that isn`t a simple html site.

There are some CMS that are SE friendly and there are others that are not.

More important is that when your static html site exceeds your needs you need some kind of cms, and migrating a well established and indexed page is far more troubled than learning a CMS from scratch.

So there is no magic rule that will work for all of us, really depends on needs and knowledge.
