Default Ebook Formatting... PDF versus Kindle versus Clickbank, and?

    Howdy,
I was wondering if anyone can give any advice about formatting for an ebook.

For my first attempt I am trying to format an ebook for Clickbank, but I am having trouble finding information about how to best do it in their medium. Can anyone point me to a sample that would be perfect for Clickbank(especially actual examples with technical instruction)?

I have not seen a sample of an ebook sold on Clickbank. I don't know how the formatting differs or should be in contrast to reading it on a Kindle fire or in a Kindle app on my iPhone or iPad.

    Can anyone offer any advice?

I'm not super concerned about certain formatting. I mean I'm keeping certain things consistent with a stylesheet as far as text is concerned, headings, paragraphs, font size etc.

Mainly, since I haven't seen an actual ebook from Clickbank, I am not exactly sure how to properly format it. I have seen how Kindle books work/function with text and images, but again how is the format with Clickbank ebooks? Any formatting assistance/guidance with this is greatly appreciated.

I have a short book already written. I am just in the process of experimenting with converting it. I have started messing around with a program called Calibre.

Again, especially since this is my first attempt is converting to an ebook for Clickbank, I'd sure appreciate some technical guidance. I require it to be perfect. I want to learn how to convert to ebooks myself and I don't want to pay to have it done.

Can a clickbank version ebook have a cover, and a back cover? Is it just a regular pdf with pages, or is there something more to it?

Lastly, I realize how a book converts to read differently in different devices through Kindle, but what about Clickbank?

I super appreciate any and all assistance.

Clickbank ebooks are pdf books; one example is Lisa's Niche Website Success. You can use any pdf program or convert to pdf from Word, etc. It is the easiest way to go.

Since the cover is in the pdf you can design or have someone design it as you want. It is essentially just another page in the book although you will need something more for publishing on your site as advertisement.

Kindle has their own formatting which is more complicated obviously as you can see a lot of publishers have pages that haven't turned out too well when viewed at different sizes, etc., especially things like the table of contents.

Clickbank books get higher refund rates but you make more profit for sales to start with. There are pros and cons each way.

Ok, so for Clickbank, a basic PDF formatted as nicely as possible, right? And it can include a book cover page etc. I'm definitely aware there's a little more involved with Amazon.

I'm interested to see if there's enough of a user base for this niche on Clickbank to make anything with an ok product. It's about "football betting," and there a few products on there which sell a little.

I imagined for some reason there might be higher refund rates on Clickbank.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I'm exited to try this. I have had the means at my disposal for a couple years, but I have just been like meh. I'm finally carrying the ball!

I have created a Pitch page, and I'd sure like to see someone's thank you page to contrast.

I am kicking myself in the butt because it's the end of the football season, but still, this will be up and ready for next year! It's also a great intro to the whole setup with a product on clickbank.

    Still reading and learning here.

I am setting up a "Thank You" page.

I understand Clickbank transacts for the product, but how then is my digital pdf ebook delivered?

Am I then responsible for determining the delivery method of the file? Or does clickbank distribute it?

Just wondering b/c I'll need to get a system setup for that to happen automatically as well.

    Your help is appreciated.

You offer the download from the Thank You Page you create. So you zip up the PDF using Windows (right click file and "Send To" Compressed) and it will zip it up. Upload that file to your domain yoursite.com/book.zip then you offer that download link from the than you page. (Clickbank will prompt you to upload a Thank you Page)

Amazon has some really good tutorials on their Kindle section for setting up a Kindle book. My next ebook for my hair site will be a Kindle book. You have to format the file a certain way and follow specific instructions for pictures but it's not too bad.

Thank you. That helps. If I may ask, and if you're willing to share, what kind of security settings do you make for your pdf? PDF formatting is much easier than the Amazon formatting.

    Thank you again.

I agree it is easier with the PDF. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional and I use their password/encrypt feature that restricts editing but there are many other economical options. If you google "password protect PDF" there are all kinds of options.

I've always wondered what resolution to create the covers at. Should it be 72dpi or 300dpi? Should the book be suitable for printing at home as well as viewing on Kindles, iPads and iPhones?

The good thing about PDF's is that they are already viewable on iPads and iPhones. The Kindle is a different story and it needs to be properly formatted. I believe all my covers have been 72dpi and they've been fine.

I do still have a concern/confusion about the Thank-You Page leading to download the book.

So I think I understood your instructions, Lisa, but would not this viewable URL be something a buyer could post all over the internet where folks could then be downloading it for free?

I mean would not both the "thank you page" URL and the actual link to the PDF itself be viewable and sharable?

Do you have a way that your download link can be clicked on but not shared? Like is it hidden/masked or something?

Or am I just missing something?

    I'm almost there!!!!!!

    Default Protect yourself from thieves.

There is a three part solution:
make sure you set your site NOT to print directories for folders without an index files
use what amounts to a "high-value-password" for the file folder (such as ms8KW94cyoucandobetterebook)
use a robot meta tag so the page will not be indexed by Google (<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow" />)

I am using a wordpress site for my landing page and thank you page.

Can you explain in any more detail how those steps are accomplished?

I have ftp access, and also access to cpanel on my server.

Your help is very much appreciated. I am not rushing my steps. It's been taking me weeks, but I wanna get it right.

    Thank you.

    1. Can you please explain how/where I set my site not to print directories for folders without index files?

    also,

    2. Can you explain how/where to set up a "high-value-password" for the file folder?

Is this file folder where I will put my final zip file which contains my ebook?

And when/where will I provide this password to users? On my thank you page?

I successfully got that robot meta tag installed with the wordpress plugin.

I am trying to figure out the answers to your suggestions above.

Please pardon all my inquiries, I'm a little confused but I'm almost there.

I really appreciate the assistance and you are certainly helping me out.

    Thank you.

    Default Q&A

You asked two questions about my post and I will try to answer both, at least to explain what I had in mind.
    1. Can you please explain how/where I set my site not to print directories for folders without index files?
This is important for any site in my opinion, but especially if you have pages you do not want to expose to everyone. For anyone who hasn't been exposed to this, if you go to a folder on an unprotected site and there is no index file in a given folder you often get a listing of all the files in that directory (folder). Not always good, especially if you are talking about marketable material.

It is very easy to stop this. If you want to explore it you will find other ways as well, but this one is very easy. Just add one line to your .htaccess file (assuming you have one—it is easy to create one if you don't) which tells the directory to "ignore" listing anything. The line to add is: IndexIgnore *

    2. Can you explain how/where to set up a "high-value-password" for the file folder?
My host has an automated system through the control panel by which I have set passwods. If you want to actually use one, a google search on password protection of folders will give you lots of tutorials and some of them have password encryption generators for creating the passwords.

However, I was very unclear in my first post (sorry about that!). I probably wouldn't bother with a real log in password just because of the various issues involved in requiring people to log in to get their ebook. What I meant to say was that I would put the download into a folder which had a name that resembled a really good password. Many of the downloads I have purchased are in a folder with a name containing perhaps 20 scrambled letters and numbers so that no one would ever guess them. That gives them pretty good protection as long as the directory listing is prevented and you have prevented search engines from indexing the location.
    Good Success!
