Default Delicious: Is it a worthwhile pursuit?

I've been told that delicious can be a valuable seo tool, but I'm having a bit of difficulty wrapping my mind around it. Any input on how / if to make use of it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and best!

there are better social bookmarking site out there such as digg, stumble upon etc. however delicious can send a lot of traffic your way. ive heard that they might be using no-follow tags i havent got round to confirming it so for seo take a look at the other social bookmarking websites. reddit and misterwong are others you can look at. for a more comprehensive list google it!

Thank you, tofusgirl. I will definitely check out the sites you listed. What I'm a bit
confused by is how one should be employing all these various sites to help with the promotion of one's own site. What should I be seeking to accomplish within these sites and what is the cleanest, white-hat, most effective means of maximizing the benefits?

Many thanks!

Social bookmarking sites can send your site a lot of traffic - but the traffic will not be targeted and will have a high bounce rate.

You would be better off spending your time working on targeted traffic.

Thank you, Kev. Your point about social bookmarking sites contributing to a higher bounce rate is well taken. My question is being answered by the various pros and cons people have presented. That's exactly what I was hoping for.

Your welcome.

My google analytics shows that traffic from just about all social bookmarking sites has a bounce rate of about 85% - 98%.

Average bounce rate from google - 50% - 55%
Average bounce rate from Yahoo - @23%
Average bounce rate from youtube - 18% - 28%

I see a lot of webmasters that focus on social bookmarkings sites, but they pay very little attention to the quality of traffic those sites generate.

Hi findaguitarteacher and kev,

Here is my two cents on the topic. If you have a blog or a site that is related to social media (blogging, twitter, facebook, etc.) you might find that social bookmarking sites generate quality traffic. But if you have any other topic outside of social media or social networking your bounce rate will from that traffic will be high, just as kev mentioned.

In my case I use Diigo for social bookmarking (but not for the purpose of getting traffic). Diigo offers lots of features that are better than delicious and it allows you to highlight text and leave sticky notes (annotations) for others to view. Btw, Diigo has nothing to do with Digg. I found that submitting articles to Digg was a huge waste of time and I rarely visit the site.

One more point, it is better for you if your readers are the ones that submit your articles to bookmarking sites. Some of your audience may already have a following on those sites and they can submit your articles and send traffic your way. If you just submit all of your own articles, most likely you won't get noticed (unless you already have lots of people following you there). In some cases, like StumbleUpon, you might end up getting banned for submitted too many of your own articles.

I hope it is helpful.

Wow! Thanks for your input, Ileane. I appreciate your presenting it in such a thoughtful and clear way - all food for thought and a perspective I wouldn't have had without your help.

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond. Very helpful - to say the least.

I don't use delicious myself but people do use it to bookmark websites they like and really good blog posts they want to bookmark. So its a good idea to add a delicious button to your website.

Social networking is a popular method for bringing traffic to a website. Delicious is a famous social networking site that brings a lot of traffic to our website. It also included a Classic Mode for those who want the basic Delicious buttons without any sync or search features. This option is available when you install the add-on, and can be accessed later from the Delicious menu in Firefox.
