Default CTR really low?

Hi everyone,

I have a question. Is it just me or the CTR generally low for banner ads and stuff? On my PHP site i have tried to promote various products through banner ads. i have tried many positions. But the CTR is always low and i haven't generated any lead through these ads. Few months ago i promoted GoToMyPC, i had no leads for that. For the longest time i promoted web hosting ads, no sales. Now, im promoting successful offers from copeac and i havenot generated a single click through yet.

I always see banner ads on high traffic sites. So how are these sites successful at banner ads?

It does not surprise me at all that banner ads have very low or no CTR. As you are aware, most surfers today probably do not even see them. Thanks to the bright flashing banners of the late 90s and early 2000s (and some sites still carry similar ones) most web surfers ignore them.

Sometimes, banner ads pay per thousand impressions, so maybe that's why you still see them around... but when I have looked into this a while ago, I think it was somewhere around 30-40 cents per thousand impressions... so if I have one of these banners in a page that gets 1000 visits per day (which is pretty good traffic), I would make 30-40 cents that day... so it seems hardly worth it.

I wonder if there are techniques, such as ad placement, or maybe certain banners are dynamic and might have a higher CTR...

Yeah that's why I don't bother with banners anymore for the same reason ssmorgan mentioned. This is particularly true if you have a site related to web development like yours because your audience is even more web savvy and not phased by banners.
