Default my traffic

hi folks,

I am using the tracksy.com free count to monitor my traffic. It shows the IPs and hostnames of the last 20 visitors. My traffic seemed a lot higher than expected today, so I looked at the hostnames and they were all AOL.com with many different IPs. Many of them were 207.200.116.xxx All the "unique" hits were within a 10 minute timeframe. The location is the same for all the "unique" hits. I am presuming they are all from the same person, does anyone know what would cause so many different IPs?

I don't know the technical background of how an IP is generated but I have noticed that with my IP address of my PC, the last digits (after the last period) change all the time.

I think it has to do with the internet service provider having so many different IP addresses. When someone logs on they grab whatever line is available at that time. It also depends on how your modem is setup.

Your visitor could have been kicked off and logged back in using a different line. If they are using a dial up account, maybe someone called them and disconnected the line?

Bu I'm no expert maybe Techieguy can enlighten us?

I'm not too familiar with AOL, but from what I have read AOL users go through the AOL proxy. Apparently, an AOL user will get a different IP address with each pageview, which explains why you are getting multiple IP addresses with a few minutes from the same location.

The AOL proxy causes this as an AOL user will have the IP address of a proxy server instead of their own address.

Many people who check their Web site stats have noticed this as being a problem.

This has also caused some problems from AOL users as some site may block one of the proxy IP addresses, which will prevent any user using that proxy from accessing that Web page.

Hope this helps.

I wondered if they did that techie guy, seemed extremely unlikely that i would get so many aol hits in a short time as my site is low traffic
