Hello everyone.
Are keywords really important now? I know that in the days of the Web's infancy, keywords had a lot of importance and they were used by many webmasters. But unfortunately, some webmasters exploited them and so search engines gradually started to ignore keywords (like the ones in the <meta> tag). Now they depend more on content and back-links.
So, today, according to me, keywords dont have that much importance. What do you guys think???
I think keywords in meta tags are still as important as before.
It is only Google that has declared that they do not care about meta tags. However, Yahoo! and MSN/Live still take meta tags into consideration. Google's share in the search engine market is enormous but Yahoo! and Live can still get a good number of visitors to your site.
Many SEOs recommend using them. I include them all the time. However in some cases it may not be possible to include them. For example, if you are using wordpress, you may have to install special plug ins to be able to use meta tags.

I've read differently ncaditya and was under the impression they have less of an impact even in Yahoo and MSN. Yes, you should add them but I don't think they have as much weight as they used to. Just my opinion.

I agree with you. I believe, Yahoo! and MSN will slowly switch to a model similar to Google. I believe they have already done this. Google bombs did work in Yahoo! and Live after all and so it indicates just like Google, these search engines have started to give more prominence to off-page factors.

Keywords in meta tags may not have much of an importance.
however, keywords in title tags, heading tags such as H1, H2 and H3 and keywords in your content including both text and hyperlinks are crucial.
You should target your important keywords in your heading tags.
In your content you use the same keywords with different wordings. For example, If you have page on the topic keywords itself you would have keywords in your content such as "keyword importance" or "keywords are important", etc.
I'm not sure about the density of the keywords as in how many times you should repeat them in your content.
