Default Adsense - Some interesting experience I just had.

I just finished a web site for my sprinkler biz about two days ago; up done and running perfect.

During this same two day time period I applied for the Adsense seller deal. And two days later I was shocked; I log in an there is an ad running on my web site. After reading some of the stuff on this site I thought it might be a month before I heard back from Google.

This is what's so funny. My sprinkler biz is called CaliforniaSprinklerCom. I service the Orange County area. Well the Adsense ad that is sitting on my web site is promoting a sprinkler biz that does the same thing I do in the same county and state. So there ya have it folks. A human behind a desk would never have done anything so stupid as this.

My point! So much for artificial intelligance, Google still has a lot to learn yet. I sure am glad that I did not spend my money testing this out. I used some credit that I had from coupons from a host provider. On the good side of the story. If I type the phrase 'sprinkler repair' or 'sprinkler systems' or 'sprinkler design', I'm about the fourth post on the right side of page one so, it does appear to work well.

What about this? What if someone wants to play around and just klik on your ad six times just for the heck of it? That's what I did when I saw the ad on my site. Then I said, !@&@!!.....forgot that this is against Google policy and was not even thinking about the point that someone is paying for these kliks, sorry.

There ya have it, I learned alot about Adsense in two days. Approved fast and happy about that but, have to wonder about the design and automation of that software. It's a robot, no more, no less. Works hard and fast but does not have a clue and maybe could care less about the client that is paying for this test model.

    What do you think?

Are you talking about Adwords? Why would you be running Adsense units on your site if you are advertising the website in the first place? Sorry I'm a little tired and I keep re reading the post to try and understand what you mean!

    Hi Roger,

Not quite sure if you fully understand the implications of all that. Lets examine this statement:

This is what's so funny. My sprinkler biz is called CaliforniaSprinklerCom. I service the Orange County area. Well the Adsense ad that is sitting on my web site is promoting a sprinkler biz that does the same thing I do in the same county and state. So there ya have it folks. You do understand that they get paid by their client to advertise for them correct? What you have actually done is provided a laser guided, keyword rich "billboard" for them to advertise for your competitor. Sure, you may make a few cents per page view or click or however AdSense does it, but once a visitor clicks an ad on your site, that's a lost sale for you. Where would you actually be making out better? Gaining a new customer or a few pennies from G.

I don't do Adsense and am not really sure how it all works but I wanted to make sure you saw things from both sides of the fence. In this case I believe that "robot" knew exactly what it was doing and how to best make money for G...

Not trying to be a buzzkill, just an objective opinion...

You always have to think about the purpose of a site as well as the purpose of a page on your site.

For the reason you have well identified, a local business site is not a great location for Adsense ads in general. Usually a local business site will have less traffic but directed traffic that you want to keep on the site, not lead away with an ad.

Even on content sites, many people prefer to not include adsense on the home page even when they do elsewhere. In addition, sales pages including pre-sell pages for affiliate promotions would not be a good place for ads. Otherwise just as you have someone convinced to check out the product they might see an ad in the side bar for a competitive product and decide to check it out first.

You have to think ahead at all times to avoid a hard knocks school lesson about the "law of unintended consequences."

Of course I understand that they get paid to rep the client. I just did not expect an ad in the same line of work that I did. I thought I might see something like some real estate agent ad or something. As I said, this is my first walk around the block with PPC. Surley it is strange with evryone the first time. My goal was to learn the system, use the coupon and het some experince with Adsense and, that I did. Thanks for your feedback Scott. Cheers

For sure James, well put. My tail is between my legs a bit, but as I said, it was a coupon that I lost on this lesson. That's how ya learn sometimes, by loss and, I learned a lot about Adsense for two days of experience sitting in front of that console display of theirs learning all the acronyms.

Thanks for your input James, I enjoy reading your feedback always.

As I said, Adsense, not Adwords, I know the diff. Why run it on my site? I just wanted to use the coupon, I did not think their computer would match me up with an ad that was the same as my trade listed on my site. Ha Ha Ha I'm tired also, I should have posted this when I was fresh not exhausted.

    Thanks Ray, take care.

No need. Think of it as a terrific learning experience, one you won't forget. In this business we all learn by doing. If you only read about it your progress is slow, very slow. It is like learning to use your graphics program. Unless you try those keys and get it wrong several times you never get to the point where it works.

That is why I think so many give up, or never succeed at a minimum. They worry about what doesn't work too much. You have to look at it like a game. Every time I try a little css I expect to guess wrong about ten times before I get it to work when I try something new. If I am lucky. I don't worry about how many times it doesn't work, only whether I ever to get it to work or not at all. (But I always get it to work eventually, even if it takes me all day! I call it determination. My wife calls it something else.)

    hi,
I also created my own website and i will use google adsense for ads, have you registered your site in adsense because it will take
at least 48 hours , and if your content is not appropriate the it may ban your site
