Hi Craig.
1. Not necessarily. The best way to get links if of course to have good content but to get involved with other people in your niche. One way I do this is by finding blogs and start making useful comments on the posts to let the author know I'm reading. Sometimes they'll contact me and we'll get to know each other and perhaps they'll feature my article in their newsletter, etc.
These days it's all about networking. The search engines want to see you have links from other high quality sites. It's not just enough to put up articles and wait for the traffic like we used to.
2. You can lose a lot of money with AdWords if you're not careful. So it's important to set a daily budget when you start. Also decide if you are going to do it just to bring traffic or if you're trying to sell a specific product and convert. If you are just going to use AdWords to draw in extra visitors then be sure to send them to a strong landing page that serves a purpose (i.e. collect an email address, etc.)
3. As I said in #1. Get involved with people in your niche. Find forums specifically related to your site and interact with other people. Look for webmasters in your niche who are looking for guest writers for their newsletter, comment on blogs, etc.
4. See #1 and #3. Also have you tried any of the social networking sites like digg.com , stumbleupon.com , reddit.com , etc.? I don't use them too often but have gotten some traffic from digg and stumbleupon. People who really work these sites have learned to generate some good traffic. But you DO have to work them.....everyday.
5. Once is enough. Getting listed is easy. Ranking well is the challenge. A lot of people resubmit over and over again thinking the engines didn't get their submission. But when they do a search for their domain name, most people find that they are indeed listed. They just have to work on getting ranked.
Remember it could take 6 months to 2 years to start seeing decent traffic from the engines so that's why it's important to work hard at networking during that time. That's what the net is moving toward.
