I'm not sure about this as well. Just make sure you have your analytics data handy to prove the amount of traffic you do have.
There are tons of programs out there (even adsense) which allow advertisers to bid on your ad space so you may want to start using them to get a wide variety of advertisers considering advertising on your site.
There you will see the going rate for your ad space and you can always take it off after a month and charge more by negotiating directly w/ advertisers.
