Default Rentacoder

I was going to accept a job I could do when I figured out I had to give out my social security number. Is it safe to give out?

I don't remember having to give my SSN on Rentacoder, but then again I have never accepted a job there. I'm always the one submitting requests for coders to complete. So maybe it's different when you're on that end. For what it's worth, Rentacoder is a respectable company but if you aren't comfortable with it then you certainly shouldn't do it. I'm sure there are other freelance sites out there that don't require it.

they are wanting your SSN in place of a tax id I believe as the people you are building for need to have a way to prove on the taxes that they didn't go to Cancun with the funds. It is solely for tax purposes.

Default Also required [info relevant for the USA].

If you get paid through them they will probably have to file with the IRS about your income, normally anytime your annual pay exceeds $400.00, I suspect, and file some kind of 1099.

It is like the banks. They have to file an interest form whenever you get over $10.00.

Still, it is good to be concerned. I would ask them why they want it. If they do not have a good reason they may waive it.

Also, for everyone, I would freeze (or lock) my credit report. Whether you give your Social Security number or not identity theft is rampant. Freezing your credit report can prevent people from opening credit cards or getting loans in your name.
