webdev, I don't think I will ever quit my "day job" either...

I am currently in grad school in a science field. Even when I am making 10k/month from internet marketing, I will remain in the science field to some extent... the only difference is that I will do it on my own terms, i.e. without the boss, the politics, and the drama.

Default Excellent topic

Before I read this thread I thought to myself I wouldn't quit my day job unless I earned at least twice what I am making now.

I, like Lisa, have no desire to climb the corporate ladder and to be honest, while my day job is a decent job, its also a dead end job For some reason, I just don't feel the need to be one of those dog eat dog women in the corporate world and the funny thing is, I feel kind of bad saying that. I guess we are taught to want those kind of things.

I have many interests and they don't involve what I do at work. I would love to live in France one day, do my artwork and possibly start my own business there. I know that if I work hard now at something, those dreams might be reachable.

Unless you are doing what you love at a day job like some folks on here (you guys are the lucky ones!) then a 40 hour a week job is just a soul draining monotony hell.

But back to the original question... I will only feel confortable quitting when I have adequate savings and I am making twice the amount I am making now. I know I will have to buy my own health insurance which is expensive and can really add up... of course if I move to France, I won't have to do this

Exactly French Maid. I think it's awesome that many of the people that posted in this thread want to continue what they do. Me personally felt my 9 to 5 was hindering my life and now I have the freedom to travel and do more things I want to do.

I agree that earning double is a good goal to set. I was overly cautious and waited until I was making even more than that, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I got tired of working for a boss and I wanted to challenge myself so I quite my job.

It is a big step to take and to quite your job. You will have to make some sacrifices along the way. With proper planning you can make it. In my case ... while i was working I started with part time ventures and studied and did extensive research before I left my 9 - 5 job.

It is also wise to have a backup plan or education to fall back to.

The key is to stay positive and just take a step of faith and the sky is not the limit.

If you get older you can look back and say "I at least tried" even if you become very successful or not. A lot of people die with there dreams.

I don't have a nine-to-five -- I'm still in high school. I have a part time job, and I already make that much plus some with what I'm doing. I plan on practicing law within the next decade (7 more years of school...ack), but I have to pay for college before then. I don't like the idea of debt, which is why I'm trying to monetize my time online.

Anyone else going through college completely through website money?

Before you quite your 9 - 5 job you must make sure you have no or little debt.

You must also be sure that your business is going to sustain you. Have proper feasibily and business plan.

Lisa, I want to become just like you. It would be great to do website building fulltime.
But now that you're a professional, what do you do all day? Do you spend it all on leisure, or do you have other jobs?

If I were you, I'd get a high paying job AND work on websites. That way, you could get double the money...just a greedy thought
