A general question
The time is around 2:30 in the night as I am typing this! So much for ideas that pop up in the middle of the night!!! I would like to get your feedback.
Suppose, if I were to sell the following, how many of you would be interested and make purchases (which means my idea of making money would be working)? If even some of you are ready to buy, it indicates that this is a way to make money, right?
a) Installation of a directory script like esyndicat or PHPLD + domain name + decent hosting + some form of support >> for say $30-40 / year.
b) Blog hosting i.e installation of wordpress + installation of custom themes + plugins + domain registration + hosting + some form of support >> for say $30-40 / year.
c) Some other customized scripts, etc + hosting + some form of support >> for some similar figure.
d) Some other similar services for approx. the same price.
Please let me know your opinion.

I personally prefer to install scripts myself but I bet there are a lot of newbies that would love to have hosting and installation help. If you think about it, most web hosts don't provide great support when it comes to installing scripts (unless you use their own that come bundled with the hosting plan.)
I guess my question/issue would be, how would you promote this and reach your target audience? Most people that know what easyndicat and and PHPLD would probably know enough to install it themselves. Would a beginner even know what that is and if so, how would you reach and convince them they need this? You'd have to really speak their language because I'm sure those acronyms would scare them off. LOL
I guess my point is, your service would probably target new, non technical webmasters. That's great but how do you reach them and let them understand that they even need all those extra scripts/services.

You are right, I never thought of that.
However, I believe that blogs will be more attractive than directories to the common layman.
Anyhow, I am trying to check if this method works. I have already ordered a reseller package at Westnic. Let us see what turns out and I will let you know if I make any profit. (If I don't make any profit, I still have nothing to lose as I can still host my sites at the reseller and it is only $30 approx/month).
As far as my mode of advertising is concerned, I am thinking of advertising these at Buy/Sell/Trade sections of bigger forums. If I were to tell "I will create a directory for your" nobody will bite, I know. So, I will first register a domain, create a directory, promote it a little and then sell it off! This way I will have backlinks, search engine saturation, and traffic stats (or even pagerank) to impress the buyers.
What do you think of this idea?

So let me just make sure I understand, you are going to create a directory and then use your own directory to promote your services?
I think it's a good idea, I guess my only concern is getting it to be popular with all the gazillions of directories out here.

ncaditya, its a great initiative.
Most hosting companies support easy installation of 3rd party CMS software like joomla and blogs like wordpress. But at the same time most new comers to website building don't realize that these services are free when they web hosting. So, my speculation is that if advertised to the right audience in the right way, it could work.

Seems like a plan! I don't how many people out there are out there looking to buy already made directories?
Which brings a question. Can you sell your websites? Are people out there looking to buy websites? Where can you sell them? I have few websites that are just collecting dust. I can sell the entire website including source code, hosting and domain for some money. I wonder how much i can get for my image hosting website?

You can sell your sites at Buy/Sell/Trade sections of bigger forums.
Here are some forums:
http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/? (Requires a small fee to list your site)
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24 (Registration is free)
But you should be very careful when you are selling your sites as there can be scammers out there. Always use escrow services if the amount involved is bigger. Remember to deal only with trusted members and one more point, paypal doesn't take any responsibility for digital items.
