Your own Youtube?

I have seen a number of people start their own "Youtube style" video sharing site. Is it profitable? And is host such a site affordable? I have been thinking about it but I don't want to go broke trying to get it started.

In my opinion I think its an overcrowded area however statistics show that social media is the way to go forward in a couple of years but you would need mass servers to host mass user information and storage space you definitely would need to invest a lot and be prepared to take a risk you will be in competition with major companys like google who own youtube.

Couldn't agree more, Rob. The idea is nice on the surface but I think people underestimate the cost, technical expertise, etc. involved. And as Rob said, competing with Google is a tall task. It's that whole "build and they will come" theory people often have. Building is only half the story. Promoting it to make it successful is the rest.

What were you going to make a bunch of videos doing?

My suggestion is that you just make a site about that instead!

Thanks guys for all your responses! I found a script that takes advantage of YouTube (and other sites) syndication features. I can run a video site that simply indexes and embed video from other sites. It uses very little bandwith and it is easy to manange. The script I found was free but rough around the edges. I had to tweak it to make it acceptable. I am starting a tech site for geeks and I wanted consolidated place for videos. This solution will work until I make my first million and set up my own "true" streaming site
