Default Forum Hosting...

Hello all, first time poster. I'm really happy to have located this site. Lots of great info. Thank you to the admin Lisa for creating this site.

My question pertains to hosting of forums. Are there hosting companies that specialize in this area or am I just fine hosting a forum on bluehost vs. hostgator vs. justhost? Any difference in performance per host for forums specifically?

Thank you for your time and assistance,

Drivie

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

I'll think you'll find that there is so much competition in the hosting market that most hosts will give you a good service at a reasonable price.

I would advise you to go with host that offers Linux with cpanel and possibly allows you to host multiple domains. The disc space and bandwidth is normally ample to cover your needs for a few years. You can always upgrade later.

Regards

Bob

Any Shared Linux hosting with cPanel will do fine for a forum.

Hosting is hosting, make sure you get good bandwidth.

I am a user of host 14 days ..
I paid $ 28 with the intention to buy even the PRO package .

for these 14 days RazorWebHost was moving my forum 3 times ...
three times changed the DNS ..Anyone who understands a little knows what it means for the forum and for the domain ... a break of at least 48 hours .

my forum had over 8000 members now destroyed

three times removal and all three times without a transfer backup database

This morning I re-installed Forum..upload is limited to 2 MB ...???

today has fallen several times by an hour ... is currently down

Can not get in any contact with the hosting

there is no way, except on msn which is no one there

amazing experience ... very ... very bad hosting

if someone ajoš interested and has questions I will gladly answer from experience

Default Sorry to hear you had such difficulty.

We all sympathize with your experience. I also want to thank you for sharing it. There are many potential problems in website work, but it helps to learn from others and avoid as many as possible. That is one of the greatest values of this forum.

Many people here ask about web hosts. There is good reason to be careful in choosing one that is reliable and one that can meet needs.

We wish you the best.

Thanks for the advice.

My plan at this point is to run vBulletin. Any gotchas or pitfalls to look out for with certain hosts and this forum software? What about compatibility with add-ons and such?

Thanks again,

Drivie

Most commercial and generally available open source software will have been tested and used many times over on all the major hosts. If necessary bugfixes and workarounds will have been included in the software to make sure that it will work.

I really recommend Invision Power Board over vBulletin.

They are basically even, but I like IPB's features more.

You don't need a dedicated server or a VPS for a forum.

Any large webhosting company will do, eg, 1and1, JustHost, GoDaddy, etc.

Be careful in choosing a host for a forum. Some could be very expensive and give little bandwidth.

You are completely fine with using a well know web host other than one that specialises in forums (I recommend HostGator!). Hosting companies that say they specialise in certain areas such as forums are normally saying that to find a less saturated niche. Also by focusing on promoting they’re hosting as "forum hosting" they find it easier to do well in search engines.

But really the popular companies are big for a reason because they offer fantastic plans/service for all types of hosting.
