Anyone here uses phpBB? Does it provide good forum features? What about the designing capabilities? etc

I used to use phpbb, but do not use it or recommend it anymore. Take a look at MYBB or SMF. Either one of them should do the job.

Between MYBB and SMF, take a look at MYBB first.

I used it a LOOONG time ago. I really don't remember much about the specifics but it was pretty easy to setup if you know how to upload and change permissions on files. I can tell you that they don't have nearly as many customization options as vbulletin or other paid forums.

I think it's all about personal preference. Personally I like phpBB a lot more than SMF.

I use PHPbb and its great, there is also a website called PHPbb hacks that contains loads of mods (like RSS feeds for PHPbb forums) and templates.

I am new here. I work with PHPBB and Vb both are more customize but I recommend VB I recently shift my client's forum on VB I think its more secure....
