In the future I would like to create a forum for site visitors. I am not to happy about the potential inevitability of having to register and set up a "sub-domain" for the forum. For potential SEO benefits, I would rather have the forum on the same domain as the web site.

I now know that there are plug-ins that can give a Wordpress built website forum or bulletin board functionality. But needless to say, I am no too blown away by the lack of features. The functionality of "dedicated forum scripts" such as Vb and Xenforo do blow me away.

If I go with the dedicated forum, am I forced to create a sub-domain (if I desire to link the forum with the static website)?
