Default How long should I buy for

I am developing a web site, which I hope to have ready by the end of the year, by then I'll obviously have a domain name

The site preparation will take me a bit of time as I've just started learning about HTML, CSS etc.

I do have a domain name in mind, which I feel is an excellent choice and it is still available; (ending with .co.uk)

The option on one site is to buy it, for only 2 years.

Although quite cheap I don't want to purchase for any longer, but is there a catch with this.

If, in 2 years my site is great and I'm earning money, will I be able to extend my use of this domain for the same 'sort of price' or will there be a sudden hike in the price.

Any coments would be greatly appreciated.

Regards !

It depends on your domain registrar. They might increase their price or they might not. Chances are, they won't. Be sure to buy from a well respected registrar, like http://www.123-reg.co.uk

Keep in mind that once you buy a domain, you're not stuck with that company. You can "transfer" your domain to other registrars if need be.

For example, I recently transferred some domains from Directnic.com to Godaddy.com and it was pretty easy.

When you register a UK domain (minimum 2 years) you will be sent a reminder about 2-3 months before the expiry date so that you can renew it. For about 30 days after the expiry date you can still keep the domain but the registrar may charge a premium.

Most registrars charge about £3 plus vat / year ie about £7 for 2 years.

I buy all my domains from http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ but I haven't used them for hosting.

Regards

Bob

I agree with Jonathan's method,it is very good.
In addition,i found that some registar offer cheap domain but there are some limites on it,such as you can not transfer or renewal. So when you registering a domian you'd better asking the domain registrar clearly.

Thank you all for your replies

After reading up on the matter, I came up with a few questions to ask my chosen domain registrar.

I e-mailedthe same questions to a few companies and have picked my registrar, based upon the speed of reply and the answers provided.

Full marks go to daily.co.uk, HeartInternet, DomainMonster and LCN

Regards !
