As far as search results are concerned, a dot com domain doesn't necessarily ensure good rankings. You should be fine with other gTLDs as long as the page content, keywords and incoming links are fine.

First Impressions Last!
All in all I think there is a fine balancing act between getting a domain name with the most common extension, getting a domain name which includes a good ‘theme’ keyword, and creating a unique, catchy and memorable domain name that sticks in the mind of anyone who comes across it and a domain that is easy to type and compliments your blogs overall theme and branding.
If you can check all of these boxes I think you are onto a winner!
I think though that most people settle for a domain name with preference on a generic keyword within the domain and will compromise using a .com domain just because the .com domain name with their desired keyword is taken.
I think this can be a big mistake, and a mistake I have made myself!
My opinion is that you should give more weight to the originality, creativeness and uniqueness to a domain name and gravitate strongly to a .com domain as well, even to the point of sacrificing the use of a keyword in your domain name.
For everything a domain name is, your domain is really your calling card for your blog or site and is the very first element of your blog which has the potential to leave a positive and lasting impression even for someone who hasn’t yet seen your blog.

Of course the content is what matters the most but I have noticed that .com/.net extensions help boost search engine rankings when the domain name is the main keyword that is being searched for. I've also noticed that it's easier to rank keyword domains that are .net than .com, which really surprised me.

I don't think Google prefers any TLD. But I heard a lot about Google sees .info and .cn sites as spammy sites. But if you update your sites regularly with quality content and do some good SEO, I can't see why Google doesn't prefer that site and rank it well irrespective of what TLD it is!

I have many .info domains which outrank .com sites. I dont think Google gives any preference to domain extensions.

And if you want to sell something, you definitely must go for the .com domains.

I dont know about Google preference as Google never disclose such kind of information but linkback from .net, .org and .edu is more powerful than .com

Domain extensions has absolutely no effect on SEO!
However, it seems to be a wide agreement that Com domain is the best choice. IMO, it may because that it has been around for a very long time and they have gained much authority and reputation.

domain name reads cooler with .com, almot all high ranking websites have .com, and it makes your site very little more professional over other extentions.
