Default best places to register domain name

Hi everyone - I am about to register a domain name for a site that will feature a substantial data base. I've heard a number of criticisms about Godaddy.com. Can anyone make recommendations of places to register domain names that they feel offer excellent customer service with good track records?

You can register your domains with NameCheap.com or Name.com, both offer free private registration and are also cheap. Were you talking about the stuff on NoDaddy.com when you said "criticism about GoDaddy"? I hate GoDaddy for their greedy business practice and tactics.

I like DirectNic myself. Not the cheapest, but more trustworthy in my opinion.

It depends how you handle the database.

I had trouble on 2 occassions with GoDaddy with affiliate marketing databases.

1/ Godaddy does not allow "LOAD DATA INFILE" so getting a large CSV feed into your database can be a pain.
2/ Godaddy does not allow access to external mysql databases so getting information from another server can be a pain.

    Regards

    Default DirectNIC?

I left DirectNIC because I could not do what I considered a rather basic operation (sorry I cannot remember what it was). They do support php and MySQL but have somewhat limited services otherwise. With any host you have to be careful of what they offer and what you may need.

They also charge ten dollars a year for the first email address and five for every additional email address to the same account. My host and many others offer unlimited email. I'm not positive, but I think you have to pay separately for every domain while many hosts now allow unlimited domains.

For many of us, it is very helpful to use multiple email addresses for various purposes. For example, with a newsletter I use editor @ domainname.com for mail. And many of us also host several domains. These costs could add up to quite a lot.

One thing in their favor, and this is one reason I hated to leave them, during Katrina (they are in New Orleans) they manged to do whatever it took to keep their service functioning. Quite an accomplishment.

I only use DirectNic for domain names, never used their hosting.

    Default ok

They seem to be quite reliable for that, no doubt, though at $15.00 they are a little expensive. When I moved to Dreamhost I didn't have all the domains I do now and Dreamhost gives me one domain free with hosting, so obviously there was no reason to leave the registration there.

Default what I ended up choosing

In the end, I opted for Network Solutions. Not the cheapest option on the block, but...good customer support, mysql and php and recommended by people I trust.

Guess you missed all the stories about them. I wouldn't use them for anything.
