I need some help. I am about to register a name for my website. I cannot get the .com name that i want however the .net name is available. Should i change the name to a different one to get a .com name or will the .net name work?

The .com name will not be competition of mine. Any help would be appreciated.

If you can think of a name for the .com then I would go with that one. Visitors remember .com easier than .net because it is so popular.

Myself on the otherhand stayed with the .net name because the .com name was taken. I'll be patient and maybe be able to get the .com in the future.

I don't think you should use .net, .net is reserved for network companies like ISP's and media company that provides any type of net service.

You said the name was taken what about .us, .ws, .org are these names available?

You can use .us is your site is register with USA information let say addresses, but if your .com is already taken try another name.

I don't recommend you register .net because every person who visit your website will think is network company.

ok i was leaning towards the .com. What would be a fair price to purchase a .com name that is not actively being used?

Having a .com or .net in your domain name as supposed to mean something, but in reality it hasn't materialized.

ISP providers and network companies probably all use .com as well as pretty much every other site on the Web.

Why? Because it is popular and people are used to entering .com.

The average Web visitor (and I'm not talking about techies) probably doesn't even now what those three letters mean (with the exception of the country codes), or probably don't care. For many people they just type in an address without any regards to the last three characters.

Originally, .com was supposed to mean a commercial site, but that has pretty much been abandoned as every Tom, **** and Harry site now uses it.

Yeah I've heard that you should always go for the dot com because people are accustomed to that extension, but don't most people find your site via search engines and other links? How often do people type in addresses anymore anyway? I can't tell you the last time I did unless it was an address I am familiar with like yahoo or cnn.

Some of the other posters are correct try to get the .com I have used .info with some success. But as a rule of thumb when I buy a domain name I buy all of them .com .net .org etc. you can point them all to the same place and you have that many more domains you can submit to the search engines.

I can think of a situation where that happened to me. A friend of mine started a site and he gave me the address over dinner. I remembered the name but not that the extension was .ws so I went home and typed in the .com version and of course got a different site.

So for word of mouth advertising (like those radio commercials that announce the address and you can't write it down 'cause you're in the car) a lot of people will remember the name and automatically type in the .com extension.

I wanted to buy my name as a .com, I thought it would be a sure deal being I have a really unusual last name, but it was taken. I bought the .info for $1.99. I'm pretty happy the way it worked out. If I google it, I'm usually in the top three sites that pop-up.
