Default How not to get a domain.

Every one might already know this, but since it's the domain forum, thought I'd pass on a important tidbit when getting a domain name, mostly from experience.

Always keep your domain name and hosting separate, that is with different companies. If you ever part ways with your host, on bad terms, and they have control of your domain name, you might have a tough time getting it back.

Hosting companies are like any other businesses, some times they just turn to crap, it's happened to me a few times. If you have control of your domain, you can transfer it to any host, but with out control, your pretty much at the mercy of the hosting company.

Not to say this happens often, but it's always a possibility.

Many hosting services offer free domains with a new hosting account. Nothing wrong with the deal, just make sure to get control of the domain as soon as you can.

Just like in the brick and mortar world, it's like some one else having the only set of keys to your store.

Just thought I'd pass it on and maybe save some one some grief.

Hi Ron,
Another tip is to always use a company with a good reputation like host gator and goDaddy

Even though I use them for SSL, I've heard so many bad things about domains from GoDaddy. It's Directnic for me

Default directnic?

Even though I really don't use a wide variety of programming and support functions, I left directnic long ago because I could not do some things that I thought quite simple. It has been some time ago so I am not providing an up to date evaluation, but I would be careful.

An editorial addition: I reread your comment. If you are only talking about domain registrations and not hosting, then I had no problem with that.

Buying both from single company is not a problem and its good too bcz all the changes on the domain like ns1,ns2 and adding sub - parked domains etc will take effect within few hrs. If separate will take time at least 24 hrs. Will be problem if go for free domain name, many host are providing free. So me suggesting take both from single reliable and good company

Huh? The question again, what if you have a problem with your host and they have control of your domain name? I've been there and know many others who have been there.

As far as DNS changes taking affect, or how long it takes, has nothing to do with whether you have your domain with your host or a separate DNS service. Sure doesn't take 24 hours or longer just because you have your domain with a separate domain provider.

Interesting. I use GoDaddy for my domains, and have not had an issue with them.

I do keep my hosting and domain names separate.
