Just getting started
Hi -
So, I've thought of my domain name (it's available). I was thinking of using Yahoo for my hosting because it's affordable and I've heard it's really great for beginners. I was just wondering if I should also register my domain name with them...??...They charge $9.95 for the 1st year, and $35 per year after the 1st term expires.
Any suggestions?
If you think I should go some place else for my name, how would I go about transferring it to the host I want to use? Is it a difficult process?

So, now I'm looking into GoDaddy for everything (host/name). Is their hosting good for beginners or not? Also, I didn't mention this before, but I'm planning on adding a member section to my site (indie musician site) in the future (not yet) where my visiter's can create profiles/upload their music. Is the tool needed to do this included in hosting packages, or is this a separate software?
Thanks

I would go with GoDaddy over Yahoo. You can register your domain and host with them and the domains are $7 or $8 every year, not just the first year.
As far as your profile site, GoDaddy may have some built-in scripts that will help you do this but I'm not 100% sure. I do know that you will have access to CMS scripts like Joomla, Drupal where you can create a more interactive site for users. You would install them on your domain through your account control panel.

Yeah Lisa, that does sound like the better way to go - thanks!
I'm just wondering now which package I should go with for my hosting...???...Would I just need the 'Economy' plan?

I always suggest starting with that. You can always upgrade later and it's hassle free. The only cost when you upgrade is the difference in the monthly plan.

go Daddy rules, and the most important thing is that you will always find customer support that is both helpful and friendly.

Yeah, GoDaddy seems like a good option, BUT after all this, I decided to go with Hostgator - ahhhhh! Thanks for these replies anyway. I'm sure you'll see some questions from me now in regards to Hostgator as I'm building my site. Don't mean to be a pain in the butt - lol!!!!!

Welcome and great thinking.
Welcome (I didn't get into the welcome forum but will slip it in here) and let me say I recognize you already as another winner. And we have lots of them here.
It is always best to get good advice. It is always good to check out all the opportunities you need to get a good answer.
But it is most important to accept responsibility for your own future and make the decisions that seems best to you, even if it turns out badly once in a while, for only then will you excel. And excel you will. No doubt about it.

Depends what you want on your website, since hostgator and maybe go daddy oversell if your website gets big then there can be problems, this has happened a lot.
What happens is some hosts sell there webspace so much they have to resell it again to make enough money to make profit ( in basic terms) so say for example I had 1GB space which I bought for $100 a year, then I sold it to you for $50 a year. I didnt make any money infact I lost money so what they do is sell it again and again. And since people usually buy more space then they need, there isnt always a problem BUT if your website does get popular or you use a lot of website you could overload one of their servers and they will delete your website and not back it up (worst case). So just be careful. This has happened at many of the main web hosts as well as the less popular ones.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Cody
