Default Need New Domain Name as domain name pointer

Hi,

I've recently registered a domain name with certain host because I can pay monthly and they have the perfect template/design to match my business cards and stationary. Since I'm at the beginning of building my site and still working on the keywords and blueprint, I think I will have to register more appropiate domain name(s) and have them point at my original one. How I best do this?

Thanks,
Happycat

Default Easy

There are several ways. My host, Dreamweaver, includes redirect as a part of registration (no hosting fees involved). There are other ways to redirect sites or pages, too, whenever you get to that point so no need to worry about until you need to set it up.

So even though I didn't register the best domain name, I can still fix this by registering a new domain name somewhere else as a pointer. How do I do the process of getting traffic to the new domain name etc?

Default Just use it.

Sorry, I noticed that I referred to my host in the previous post as Dreamweaver! So much discussion of that program around here my fingers just typed it on their own. My host is Dreamhost.

Anyway, you don't really do anything unusual. When you buy the new domain (register it) you do not ask for hosting. You have options like host (which you do not want), park, AND redirect. So it doesn't cost anything. You should check before registering. I do not know if every host offers it. You just type in the name of the domain you want it directed to (where your site is located).

Then you just use your new domain name in the usual way. You use it in your signature files or whatever and anyone who uses it goes redirected to the site you are actually hosted at.

But I am curious as to why you would want to go this route. If you don't like the name you have why not get a new one now. Can you not change it over where you are? Wouldn't it be easier to just move the files to a new domain? It is not that much trouble unless you have a tremendous number of files and even then I would just do it.

I can see some trouble potentially in people seeing the different info in the browser or wanting to bookmark files or whatever. Also, I am not sure about the affect on search engines, SEO.

I think all you have to do is buy the domain name that you like and just change the name server to the new name to point to the server.

Thank you both for your input....
I've registered my domain name with a certain host because I can pay monthly and they have the perfect template/design to match my business cards and stationary. I did have an option to wait with registering a domain name but I did before I read SBI's guide so I can't change the domain name now and when I change host I might lose the template etc. . To get another domain name at my host I will have to pay for the whole package of a website etc.
