Domain Prices
I've heard getting a domain registration is soooo much cheaper nowadays then back in the day. Just wondering, how much did they go for?

I bought my first domain name in 1998 for $35/year at Network Solutions... which was one of the few places to go at the time.

$15 is a little high and I've never heard of any added benefits from buying your domain with them but I could be wrong.

Here what i have found about hostgator domain:
"If your domain name is registered with hostgator hosting, or transfered to hostgator hosting, you can enable the domain privacy feature for the domain name. Hostgator domain name come with free domain privacy feature, and you can use this to protect your personal information from showing up when anyone doing the WHOIS search on your domain name."
also here what hostgator said:"Most companies offer customers one or two domain servers — one main server, and one for backup. When you register your domain name with hostgator, your domain name is backed by six servers distributed around the U.S. The result? Superior connectivity and reliability.
This result in greater site visibility, reliability, and more reachable. Trouble with DNS and people can’t find your website is cut to minimum. Guess this makes the $15 worth it. Whats the point of paying $9 when the dns is so weak, and causing downtime most the time"
what's ur opinion about this?

Interesting. I didn't know that. Hostgator's a good company so it sounds like a decent deal to me. GoDaddy makes you pay extra for a private domain registration (I think).

Not so sure.
I use Dreamhost. They charge $5.95 now for a lot of service, one free domain registration with hosting, unlimited domains for the one price of hosting, etc. I've never had any down time. And I assume they have good equipment/backup, etc. since they are in top 25 host companies. I haven't checked around lately since I am quite satisfied, but the price you quote is nearly three times as much.

I use Godaddy. I have always seen the private option, but never used it.
Does Hostgator mark up their domain prices to make up for the unlimited site hosting deal? I am thinking about switching to them.

As low as $1.99 if you go for Godaddy offers. But I'm with name.com for $5.99 per domain. I'm happy with them and yes anyone can own a domain now considering its very low price.

Per domain?
Ok if you will not want more than one domain. As I wrote before I use Dreamhost, which you can purchase for the same $5.95 per month and have unlimited domains, unlimited email addresses, support for Webpress, Joomla, php, MySQL, etc. (anything most of us could ever want or need).
I wouldn't want to go with anyone who charges per domain or email as some do. That could add up fast.

I just want to add that overall, whether its 2 dollars or 15 dollars, the price of a domain name is SO SMALL. As long as you are happy with the services your company provides, is there when you need it and not when you don't then we should all be happy! I learned a while back, not to let saving pennies interfere with making dollars!
