Default why so much .com

I just went to a domain registration site and noticed how many other endings there are to domain names now (.mobi, .tv, .name, etc.) yet I hardly every see people registering anything other than .net or .com. Is there a reason people don't seem to go for the others as aggresively?

Smile Lots of domain name extensions

There are two types of domain name extensions: Generic .net, com. org and country codes .us, .uk., .de, .jp.

In the generic group .com is simply the most valuable because its the first association that people think when it comes to domain names. Other reason is also .com was the first domain name that made .com business popular because it was one of the first extensions.

Then follow .net, .org, .biz and .info. These domain names have the same status as .com, but they are just no so valuable. There are also lots of discounts on .info domain names, because they just don`t sell so good.

.mobi - is a special domain name meant for mobile users.

.aero - for flying business

.museum

.travel and so on.

Country codes are intended for a specific territory.

I have written an article which covers all of them, I can`t remember all now

Human nature is stereotypic. If there is something about the Internet, the first thing that comes to the minds of most people is "dot com"!

I will give an example. There used to be two companies: rent.com and rent.net

Every time rent.net advertised their services on radio or on buses, etc a large number of visitors would visit rent.com. And rent.com is still in business today where as rent.net disappeared long ago during the dot com bubble burst.

So what does it mean? If you are running a business website, always prefer a .com. However, if your website is going to be primarily an information website, you can go for anything. Search engines do not differentiate between the site endings.

BTW, .info is the cheapest. You can get .info domain for $1.21 ($0.99 + $0.22 ICANN tax) at Godaddy and even cheaper @ $0.88 at tierra.net

I personally prefer .info domains because it perfectly matches the motive of my sites.

Another piece of advice i would give anyone is that when registering a domain name, always try to register both the .com and .net for that domain. As ncadtiya pointed out, if in future your site becomes popular, it could hurt your business by misleading people to your competitor site who owns .com version of your domain.

Some people also register derivatives names of a their original domain name. For example, my php site domain name is php-learn-it dot com and i also register phplearnit dot com.
