Default still Confused:Hypen vs underscore

Please assist.

Whay could someone creat this url:

www.the_dog_cookie_diet.com

vs.

www.thedogcookiediet.com

I see so many people using these underscores or sometimes hyphens where it is so much easier to remember a website without them.

Does it increase hits? Raise rating? Increase Ad clicks?

Thank_you_Very_much

Mr.Trump Jr good question,

Remember in the early days of the web alot of .com names were available and you could probably get thedogcookiediet dot com.

As the internet grew alot of names got taken.

So you have a brillian idea and want to register your domain name, but to your suprise someone is already using that name.

The next logical step is to create the same name with hyphens or a different variation thereof.

I have personally never seen a domain name with underscores in. However I personally use hyphens in a couple of my domain names and hyphens and underscores in my filenames.

Hyphens is very good for SEO purposes. However if you have a very long name like one of my websites www.how-2-make-a-website.com it might not be easy to remember or type in the web browser. A word like howtomakeawebsite is easier to remember. The reason why I chose that domain name is, because all the one word domain names was already taken.

Amazingly my website url www.how-2-make-a-website.com rank top in the all the major search engine SERPS from 100s of millions other websites and sometimes billions of websites for certain competitive keyword(s).

So the lesson to be learnt is that the kiss (keep it simple stupid) principle is the best, but for SEO purposes hyphens and underscores is good.

Thanks for your reply Lajocar.
I'm sorry, I mean Hyphens.
I own 110 urls and 18 websites.
They are all great names but no hypens but now you tell me that hyphens seem to do quite well.
Why is it that the hyphens do well in regards to SEO?

Thanks!

The hyphen acts as a space.

So basically if we look at the case of my website how-2-make-a-website.com , then the search engine will see it as how 2 make a website.com. So there you have a keyword in domain name.

So hyphens is good for SEO purposes, but not good for website visitors if it is too long with alot of hyphens.

Default Of course you can use both

This has been discussed before, but you can use both and I do. My web site with three words as one was lost in the depth of the seo process until I added a hyphenated version and redirected to the first. Then it jumped to page one.

To repeat myself from other discussions, I have no evidence to prove that this is what did it but I had changed little else, so I will continue keeping the hyphenated version since it only costs the extra registration fee for one extra domain name. I keep the one word version as the way I would promote it for people to read and enter since I agree it is easier for people who are used to the more common format.

Thanks James,

hyphenated domain names and filenames can play a factor in SEO purposes.
