Default Should the website address be specific

HI all,

I want to base my website on an online game I play called Howrse. The game has 500,000 active players with 3,000 joining most days. There are facebook groups for players and also an official chat site plus websites giving game play information so I think enough people would be interested.

I am going to offer free layouts for player profile pages, graphics and answers to tests you have to take as you progress through the game. Although adults do play the main players are young girls so graphics will be pink and sparkly.

My question is whether it is worth getting the word howrse in the website address.

Thanks for any advice,
KatieMay

Hi KatieMay,

First, I would check on whether it's legal or not.

To answer your question, if it's allowed, I would definitely use "Howrse" in my domain name.

I think it is important to have the domain name as close to the site content as possible. As far as the legal aspects of the name, I don't think it is a tight as most of us might fear. I mean, coke.com may get you in trouble, but ilovecoke.com is up for grabs. At least that's how I understand internet ethics. As long as you don't lead people to think you are affiliated with the makers of the game.

Back to the main subject... I think you should use it in the domain name.

Hi KatieMay,

Howrse is a trademarked name that could potentially get you in trouble. I would start thinking of a back up plan as companies are becoming more aggressive in pursuing domain name infringements.
