Its a subsection of your site usually recognised like sub.yourdomain.com

One example is with Google, they use lots of them like video.google.com

You can read more about it here & here as far as Google/Matt Cutts is concerned.

To create a sub-domain, you typically have to do it through your hosting control panel.

As Bingo indicated, the url address would be subdomain.yourdomain.com

Alternatively, when you are on the public_html, you can create a folder, and the url for that would be www.yourdomain.com/folder

Default Subdomains

All a sub domain is, is a folder that the server sets an active link to and makes available at blan . yoursitename.com

heres some useless knowledge, www is a subdomain, give it the most common subdomain in history, but thats all that the www before a site name is, it was created to be a commonly used subdomain early on and now is almost the default, however most sites can be accessed by going to the site name without, but it is possible to have 2 totally different sites at www.mysite.com and http://mysite.com ...like I said useless knowledge, oh well.

Default The real question is...

Ladybow,

The real question is "why" before how.

I'm a fan of Suze Orman. Often she tells someone, "Yes, you could, but why would you want to?"

Subdomains have some good uses. Often they are used for blogs, for example. You see the address: blog.yourdomain.com, for example.

If you have a use like that OK but in general you have better navigation for getting people where you want linking through your site in the normal way with folders. If you ever need a subdomain you will probably know it.

Good Success!

James
