Hi David,

Yes Google searches the content within the pages which is why content is king.
They also look at domain names to see the relevance to the content.

What about your human visitors? Are search engines going to be your only source of traffic? If you place an ad or a signature file on the web with Viwoo.com how are human visitors supposed to know what the site is about?

Can people remember a made up name, can they spell it, can they pronounce it to tell friends about it? Without a lot of marketing dollars it will take a lot of time to brand a made up name.

Your creating a lot of extra work yourself going this route.

David,

While you're at it David, take time to check out Greg1's site (just above) and learn some more about domain names. And thanks for your post Greg. I regularly take note of signatures and check out a lot of them. You have a great site about domain names, lots of good information. A well done site, too.

Good success!

James

So true about Pepsi and the other known brands. It's a lot different when you have the money.

But I also believe you can use a made-up word and combine it with a more familiar word to help make your domain memorable. Since a lot of the shorter, catchy, two-word domain names have been taken some sites choose to do this. For example, BlogBizzle.com or SiteShaBang.com (only examples). Even though it's not completely clear what those sites are about, you get an idea since they contain one common word.

If you build your brand and become popular people will remember that name because it's short and quirky. As Rob said, no reason you can't work on building your own wierd-name brand.

Search engines are so focused on backlinks these days (and the overall picture) that I don't think it will hurt you much for choosing a different name.

And in the case of signatures (Greg1's point), you can still add a line of text below the link to describe what your site is about. Most people do that anyway.

Hi attackdepression,

It's true domain names are only one piece of the SEO puzzle however I want as many pieces of the puzzle stacked in my favor that I can get.

Take your name for example; AttackDepression.com a great name, very descriptive and to the point providing information on a serious subject. I know this without even looking at your site. How? Because of your domain name.

I rest my case

Yeah, all of you are correct.
Maybe right now I can start with a domain name like DesignYourDreams (by the way, it's taken). I wanted to use that domain name long ago but I realized it was taken. Anyways, I'll think and think and think for a domain name that has to do with my site and who knows, maybe later I'll be able to make a product, another site, or the one I'll have with a made up name.

Hi David,

You can use the free Wordtracker tool at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/

This will give you ideas based on search words and phrases people are using to search for your site concept. Its a great way to brainstorm new names, content, and concept ideas.

Good Luck,
