Default Be Carefull When Researching

Hello to all,

A word of caution when researching available domain names. Network Solutions has verified that names searched with their system are placed in a reserved status and can only be registered through Network Solutions for a four day period. After the four days the name will be released back to the registry and will be generally available for registration.

wow. that's good to know, but I guess understand why they would do this.

I usually research available domain names with Go Daddy, because I usually register with them anyway.

Yup and its known as domain tasting.

One thing I learned well is that when searching domains, have a credit card at hand.

Hi Gavin,

This is worse than typical domain tasting by an individual, this is from the register itself! They have direct access to all the searches done on their system by trusting customers and then they hold the names hostage. Pretty low if you ask me.

Domain name tasting is bad enough and should be eliminated (ICANN is looking into the problems of tasting) then you have a reputable register come along and do something like this. Hopefully they take a hit for this.

Is it just me or is domain choosing really heating up? You would think a company as well organised and trusted would not do such a crafty thing but I suppose its all sales techniques. All company's will have big log files of user activity when search for popular domains, and big company's are bound to take advantage of this.

I have been experiencing that the marketplace for hosting and registration is super competative.

Don't be surprised if they start selling the query lists!

I registered my last name with Network Solutions about 10+ years ago. A lot of time has gone by and my contact information was out of date so I called support to get my information changed. Before I was able to hang up the phone I got hit with sales pitches to extending my reservation, website hosting, e-mail address hosting, registering with other upper level domains, etc. The sales pitches lasted almost as long as the original intent of the call. What was funny, I got the SAME sales pitches when I called Register.com to do the same thing for another domain! OMG, I thought toner cartridge sales people were bad! The sad thing is that they try and make you think they are cutting you some great deal when they are not even close to being competative with other registrars such as GoDaddy.
