Default Is writing "joke" blog content a good idea for April Fool's day?

April is a long way off, I know!

I have read publishing fake/joke press releases is a bad idea because it can seriously confuse media outlets who might pick up the story a day late and not notice the date. But for bloggers that can write genuinely humorous content, should they go for it (and make it clear the content is tongue in cheek)?

I have written a comedy finance blog as an experiment and it has had a good response, however I do not have time to write it and would rather harvest those posts for my "serious" blog and publish them once a year as a joke. The comedy blog will be unpublished of course.

What are the pros and cons of April fool's blog content? Does it help connect with readers or build affinity? Will it just annoy them when they land on the post thinking it is something it is not. Not everybody has time to peruse an article in leisurely fashion so it could cause feelings of irritation.

I think this question comes down to the idea of what bloggers think readers want to read and what readers are actually interested in.

If you have a finance blog and wish to put an April Fool's joke on it in the form of an article it may not be a good idea, unless you have a loyal fan following who will appreciate it.

Most people come online looking for some specific information. Those who need entertainment, head straight for the entertainment sites. Google divides its search results according to its definition of niches and a joke on a Finance blog may be misinterpreted as wrong information.

Also remember that many of your visitors may be first-time visitors to your blog. When they see an April Fools joke as soon as they land on your site...well, they might just get confused.

Absolutely! Not everyone has a good sense of humor either. What you might consider a great joke may not be appreciated by your visitors.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right.

You are right about that! Even on this forum I have had people take something seriously that I said in jest. I get myself in trouble all the time online and off. For that reason I laugh at my own jokes most of the time and just keep them to myself. My wife and kids often ask me what I am chuckling about and I say, "O, just something I thought was funny." They seldom ask what knowing that it is probably some weird thought they wouldn't laugh at anyway!

However, you do not have to sucker people in for an April fools joke to be funny. You can always introduce it as a questionable bit of reporting that might just be an April fools joke or put on a title like: "Is this for Real?"

I don't know about doing this for a blog, but I used to be a member of a site I went to every day, and every year on on April Fools day they'd take down the site and put something else up, (either that the site was being sued so they had to take content down, or they'd put up fake content or re-write existing content for the day). It was always, Always annoying and I hated it as did many other visitors. Yes it was funny the first time they did it because it was like (oh they fooled me) but after that I hated it. I would always forget it was April fools day and go to read content and not be able to.

I have written a post for April Fool's day which is topical but in no way humorous or joking.
