Default Comment Spam?

How much comment spam do your sites get?

It seems like I am getting a lot more lately. 3-5 per day. Most of it is the automated kind I think. Just curious if everyone gets this or am I an isolated case?

I get a couple a week with little traffic to the site. Do you use anything to sop it? I see you use wordpress there are a couple of plugins that stop it

http://akismet.com/

http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma

Akismet has feed back and notifies you via email
Theres also contact form plugins that use akismet other CF have their own form of spam protection
http://www.bloggingexpertise.com/plu...tform-akismet/

Spam-karma just put puts a bullet in it w/o feed back

Great site and blog. I'm a personal trainer and you right on with your advice. You should think about writing an ebook or a plan and sell it.

I'd right the ebook and a short report. Give away the report...build a list and offer the full version once you list gets big. The free report thing works. I've done it.

I use Blogger and have comment moderation turned on. This allows me to remove the spam comments and keep only the relevant ones.

I read this tip somewhere, I don't know if it works.

The trick is to remove the words "comment" and "comments" and replace them with "Opinions", "Let us know what you think", etc.

It is also a good idea to reparaphrase "Powered by Wordpress". These are the two parameters by which spamming scripts locate potential wordpress blogs.

I'm getting plummeted by comment spam with my YouTube videos. I finally had to turn the comment feature off... which sucks 'cause I was enjoying reading the comments. Ugh! Darn spammers... if they put half as much energy into something productive and useful....

Thanks for the advice guys. I am trying out Spam Karma and I'll let you know how it goes.

Mike Thanks for the compliment. The report and plan is something I have never thought of. I wouldn't even know where to start, but it is something I am definitely interested in now If you have any helpful tips please send them my way.

Lisa,

Youtube is a pain in the butt for spam. I have known people that had to do the same as you. It's a shame because your videos are really helpful and there is a potential for some great dialogue using the comments.

On that note, does spamming even work? I just don't see the point if everyone knows its spam and they don't act on the "offer" or plug. What benefit is there from it for the spammer?

It's a numbers game. They blast as many sites as possible. Depending on how many site are hit a .25 to 1% click thru could mean a lot to them. If people see it often they might get curious and click thru...

It's all "black hat" and exploitive.

One more thing with Wordpress.

You can make it so only folks who register the site can comment...also you can require name and email when they comment.

Check the new registerees and when you see wacky emails it's red flag.

TIP for the short report:

Keep doing what you are doing...

Pick a topic your comfortable with...trainingg programs to lose weight...dieting regimens...effective cardio...that you already have a collection of posts on and repackage them as a report. You'll have to rewrite some of it. Add a short personal story on how you got it to work for you

Turn it into a PDF

Get an autoresponder...this is what you use to get their name and primary email

Make sure you have a thank you in the autoresponder...point them back to the blog/site...tell them to subscribe to RSS...give them the DL link...etc

Promote it on you site similar to the way I have on my birth control site or any way you like.

Every so often write a post about it and TELL them to get it...

If you have traffic this can start to build a list.

Communcate regularly via the AR...a coulp of times a month is fine. Tell a story and relate it to what the blog is about and make sure it's something useful. Managing an AR list is marketing, art, and science.

Once you have a list you can promote stuff if you wish...preferably stuff you know is good and/or use and hopefully your own product if you go that route.
