Default #1 Blog Traffic Source

I've just started blogging and am starting to get a few visitors. Just wondering what methods you use to promote your blog.

The majority of my traffic comes from Google. Make sure to get indexed in Google Blog Search

start reading & leaving comments on relevant blogs. Use social network sites such as Mybloglog and also submit to established blog aggregators.

Consider using a good blog editor like qumana or zoundry or blog desk. These make it much easier to make posts. Inserting images using the editor that comes with wordpress is not so cool. A blog client makes it a snap!

Also submit your blog to blog directories.

Default Blog promotion

Blog promotion

I don’t know what bolg software your using so that will shorten the post.

Promotion=Marketing
Marketing=Building Traffic

Building Traffic is like building a table with MANY legs

I’m sure you already know this but you blog should be on one topic. Think about what people will put into search engines and use them in your post.
Here is a post I wrote about SEOing blog posts. I did this for 2 weeks and found my self on Google's first and second pages. Dirty secret: Getting ranked is easy…staying there is a different story. The post is a little extream...so don't worry about it for every post. Over time you'll naturaly use keywords

http://keystoprofitablewebsites.com/...les/2007/08/16

Article Marketing.
Once a week or a few times a month create a “pillar” post. It’s just a post about 300-500 words. It should structured like an article (don’t sacrifice your personality) and deliver some real info and be interesting to read. You want the article to be picked up and spread to other sites and not just sit on the directory. After 3-5 days it will simply scroll out of view. The article should NOT be time sensitive. Someone could find the article and want to use it 6 months after you’ve put it on the directory.

Use www.Articlemarketer.com to submit…it’s free.

You should link to your blog in the bio. Make the bio interesting…tell a mini story and if you have any keywords link off of them. Link to your other sites as well…some services have a limit on the number of links in the bio.

RSS
Make sure you have RSS subscribe on the blog

Use a RSS submitter to submit your feed. Search Google for RSS submitter…there are sites that do the submission and there’s software but don’t pay for it because there is an open source free version. I’ve never done it but I’ve read it’s a good thing to do.

Blog Directories
Submit the blog to directories

Social Bookmarking
This and article marketing is worth its weight in gold. Put the links or icons on the blog so visitors can bookmark. Email some friends and tell them to visit the site and bookmark a post…do it for them as well. Be careful about bookmarking your own posts. If all you do is bookmark your own post some of the site will ban you. The key is to USE the service your self. Make sure you use an appropriate "tag"...basically that's will put it in the right subject on the bookmarking site

You can put a Stumble, Digg etc tool bars on your browser so use it and you’ll stay out of trouble.

I got banned from Newsvine…or something like that. No big deal for me since my blog isn’t newsy. You sure as hell don’t want to be banned from Stumble Upon, Digg or any of the big guys.

Don’t Stumble or Digg your own post if someone already has.

Finally, Don’t do everything at once. Pick one at a time and get comfortable with it then go on the next. Trash what wastes your time.

I would start with bookmarking, RSS and market article as you go along. You'll probably get most of the traffic "socially" instead of from Google.

Most of my blog traffic at the moment comes from Google. I am using Blogger, which is owned by Google, so my post usually gets listed the same day I post.

The important thing is to ping sites that subscribe to your RSS feed such as Technorati. I suggest you sign up with FeedBurner (http://www.feedburner.com) since they allow you to do much more with your RSS feed. Then ping other sites with your FeedBurner RSS feed.

I use some of the social networks like MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog. You can also find helpful advice on social networks.

as MikeD pointed out, i would recommend promoting your blog posts on every social bookmarking site possible.

Some determined blogger have had success attracting regular stream of visitors using this technique. I believe that's how techcrunch.com got started. They use to post regularly on digg and attracted visitors over the time. Now they have over 500k subscribers.

Also, to get back links, try posting on other blogs with your link.

I haven't gotten into to doing a blog yet but im sure your can use the same techniques to promote your blog as you would with your regular site.
