I thought I posted this questions yesterday but it has not appeared so here goes again.

I want to add a newsletter sign up form to my blog. Do I need a plugin to do this or can I do it without?

Does it depend on the theme?

You shouldn't need a plugin. You just need the code for the newsletter signup and paste the HTML code into your sidebar. You're using WordPress right? If so, just add a Text widget to your navbar and paste the HTML code for the newsletter there.
