Default Hosting Your Own Blog

I have heard people talking about hosting their blogger blog on their own domain in order to have more control. Are you referring something like the Infinit! from SBI?

From what I understand, this just changes the address to make it go with your website title but the actual blog is still hosted on bloggers servers. How does this give more control? Aren't you still at google's mercy in terms of keeping the blog running?

Also, is there a way to back up blogs so you don't lose content in case something goes wrong? I read about someone having their myspace page completely shut down one day and losing all of their content even though they hadn't done anything wrong.

Any thoughts?

Not sure about 'Infinit!' maybe lisa or another SBI'er could enlighten you. Most of us when talking about our own hosted blog were on about WordPress.

http://www.wordpress.com (host it on there server)

http://www.wordpress.org (download it and host it on your own)

You will need to download the files from the second link, and upload to a sub folder in your SBI! FTP.

It basically just gives you so much more freedom providing you with lots of features a huge plug-in section and control panel its truly great.

http://codex.wordpress.org/About_WordPress

You backup your database which is requirement for installing Wordpress so you will not be able to use SBI! to host your blog unfortunately I think there working on it, when they do that's my key to join

Backing up your database simply saves all your comments posts, user information. Also you mentioned Web 2.0 (my space) As i know of you cannot backup your profile account, they have complete control and when you signed up for it you will have probably signed there Terms and Conditions and in that big block of writing somewhere will be:

"We have complete control of your account and we may delete it if we feel necessary."

Yes, I believe Infinit! is just a redirect. The content is still hosted on the 3rd party (unless I misunderstood Ken's email).

In addition to backing up my database, I also backup the entire content folder that my blog is stored in on my server. I simply FTP it down to my computer once and a while.

Lisa, do you run your blog on your own software? What do you mean by your own server? Is t on your computer? I am knew to all of this and pretty confused as to how everything works. I do want maximum control over my own content, though.

For my SBI! site my blog is hosted at blogger.com but for 2create my blog is hosted on my own domain (server). That means the blog sits on my hosting account just like the rest of my content.

On the flip side with blogger.com, the content is stored on Blogger's servers. So if blogger decided to shut down I'd lose my blog because the content resides on blogger, not my hosting account.

So could I do that with my SBI account?

ETA: I'm horrified at all of the typos in my post. Knew vs. new, lol! I don't know why I always do things like that on computer/e-mail.

No, not at this time. That's why my SBI blog is hosted at blogger.

And don't worry about the typos, I do it all the time.
