Ok, excuse me for asking but I am an old timer. What is a Blog? What is it used for? How is it different from a website?

Are there any free places to obtain a blog? Can you promote your websites with your blog? Can you advertise..ie Adsense on a blog?

Sorry for basic questions but I was just curious.

Yes you can promote your website, blogging is a lot more personal than a website its about you and your life, and of course you can advertise with your blog!

Although blogs (web logs) started as personal online journals, many people use them in place of websites and earn money from them. You can make it as personal or professional as you like, but the platform itself allows for a more personal and social relationship with your viewers.

When people are toying with the idea of starting a website, I always recommend starting a blog to "get your feet wet" in the world of interent publishing. It is also a way to develop a ready made audience for a future website.

Suppose you are going to create a website about building bird houses, you could start a blog with an overriding bird theme. By the time you go live with your website, you have a ready made audience and a quality link to your new site.

Blogs are very flexible and you can really make them what you want. Most allow you to include advertising, although if you use Wordpress's free blog hosting you are not allowed to include ads. You can however host a Wordpress blog at a paid host and then use ads.

This site is really nice because it teaches you to blog in an easy to menuver web site and it teaches you how to make some money (using google ad words) with your blog.
After you have finished your first blog, you need to ping it. Log into
http://pingomatic.com
and enter your blog name and address and hit the ping button to send it to many web sites. remember to ping only after new contant is added. Don't forget to ping, because it sends out to blog site with the new content you just wrote to many sites on the web. It will build your traffic and if you add links to your own web page, it will be sure to build your traffic there as well. It seems google and other search engines are ranking sites with blogs higher.
